Veterans visit Mississauga schools

Mississauga area veterans and serving soldiers who are members of The Memory Project Speakers Bureau will visit Mississauga elementary and secondary schools during Remembrance week.

The veterans and Canadian Forces personnel will share their personal stories to help students understand the sacrifices military personnel make during war and peacetime. The Memory Project's website also features educational tools for teachers and students.

The Historica-Dominion Institute which created The Memory Project, recently commissioned a poll asking Canadians if they felt that students should meet a Second World War veteran as part of their history class. A full 90% felt that they should and 96% of Canadians feel that WWII veterans stories should be recorded before it's too late.

The Memory Project: Stories of the Second World War has been collecting those Canadian stories since June 2009. Since that time the project has recorded thousands of stories and artifacts. Included among them is the story of the last WWI veteran, John "Jack" Babcock, who passed away earlier this year on February 18th.
