As the weather cools - or is that "colds"? - Canadian thoughts turn to tropical travel. If this sounds like you, consider a travel destination that is not only sunny, beautiful and beachy but also wildly varied and educational.
The Riviera Maya stretches from Punta Brava, just a little south of the Cancun International Airport, to Punta Allen just south of Tulum. It's 72 miles of rest, relaxation, history, adventure and fun. The sheer variety of things to do will give you a vacation overflowing with unforgettable experiences.
Here are seven reasons to think about the Riviera Maya as your next vacation destination:
Dive on the northern hemisphere's largest corral reef and and discover an underwater universe. If you're a professional scuba diver this is a "must-dive," but it can also be enjoyed by amateur snorkelers. In fact, kids can enjoy this as well as anyone, making this an ideal family activity; the ever-changing sea makes many spots virtually "undiscovered." Between the region's coral reef and cenotes, you're guaranteed to be dazzled.

Visit Chichen Itza (pronounced "Chee Chen Eat-za"), the "American Egypt". Its ancient Mayan pyramids comprise the most famous pre-Columbian archaeological site in the Yucatan Peninsula. The Temple of Kukulkan, an imposing stepped pyramid, is especially stunning at the Spring and Fall equinoxes when its shadow forms the shape of a plumed serpent, a mystical symbol held dear by its Mayan architects.
Play and learn at Xel-Ha ("shell-ha"), a massive aquatic park built on the site of an ancient Mayan port village. The park is dedicated to celebrating the biological diversity of the Riviera Maya. Attractions include an expansive open-sea aquarium, various activities on both land and in the water, first-class restaurants and more.
Tulum, another don't-miss archaelological site mixes history with family beach fun. Pronounced "tool-ohm," this site, just 80 miles south of Cancun, is a well-preserved Mayan site that is also astride the coast. Tour the ancient marvels then play in the water!
Xcaret, an eco-archaeological world destination features beaches, jungle trails, subterannean rivers. You can swim with the dolphins, tour Mayan ruins and take in a nighttime "Mexico Spectacular" show. There are so many attractions at Xcaret, it's hard to know where to start.
Stroll along "La Quinta Avenida" of Playa del Carmen with its rich array of bars, restaurants, shops and golf courses. Right in the center of the Riviera Maya and featuring stretches of gorgeous white sandy beaches, this town is only a few miles removed from the dense Mexican jungle.
Swim and relax on the beaches of Akumal, Mexico. Like we need to tell you this!
