Nursing Homes & Retirement Homes

an outmoded term, outdated preconceptions

"Nursing home" is still a phrase used by people to describe long term care in Canada. Although the use of the term "nursing home" is still tolerated, it is not used by people within the retirement home industry. Indeed, there are many retirement homes that do not offer long term care.

If you are looking for more information about long term care we do discuss this under long term care nursing homes. There is a perception among a percentage of people that all retirement homes are nursing homes. That is simply not the case, of course. Most retirement homes today offer people the ability to live in community with people their own age and with similar interests.

Today's retirement homes offer activiites far beyond "bingo and lawn bowling." There are retirement homes with indoor golf greens and there are homes that back onto 18 hole golf courses. There are a variety of activities including much ballyhooed video games. There are retirement communites that offer residents complete freedom - including freedom from people younger than 50.

And there are homes that smartly offer residents some care options. Some homes include nursing or hospice care. This does not make these places nursing homes. This is simply a way of accounting for people with a wide variety of needs. This model, of course, goes far beyond blanket treatment of elderly residents.

When we hear the phrase "nursing home" we know that peope are assuming that their only option in retirement is to find a home in a dreary place where they may be neglected or treated poorly. Although this does still happen, the retirement homes represented on the pages of Comfort Life and comfortlife.ca are high end, offering excellent care for residents with a wide range of abilities.
