Berwick Retirement creates some of the most beautiful communities in BC, many at some of the most attractive waterfront locations in the province. There’s something to be said for the revitalization value of living in a location like Berwick on the Lake. It really does “impress on every level” and we’re hard-pressed to isolate factors to highlight, but the location, care, and dining here are certainly a few.

BERWICK ON THE LAKE

My mother has lived at Berwick for a year. It is a gorgeous facility located on a picturesque lake. Unlike other Senior facilities, that have a very contrived, sterile atmosphere, Berwick feels like a classy Inn with a friendly atmosphere. The interior design of Berwick is exceptional. The food is excellent. I especially like the Bistro feature where you can have meals prepared by a chef. They are scrumptious and every bit as good as a high quality restaurant. The staff are friendly and there is a high level of service provided for my mother. I feel that she is "in good hands at Berwick." This is in sharp contrast to other Senior's facilities that she has lived at in Nanaimo where she often waited for close to an hour for assistance with personal needs. A huge to thanks to all the workers at Berwick who make my mom feel welcome, comfortable and cared for.

Would highly recommend Berwick on the Lake for respite care on the Brio Intermediate Care unit. Berwick is a beautiful facility right on the Lake with the most beautiful views, gardens, and the entire facility is lovely! Dining Room staff were great and the food usually was excellent. Brio Unit is filled with very caring and nurturing health care aids and some excellent LPNs. My father had high intensity and complex needs as a palliative and end stage renal failure patient. Having RNs on staff would have been beneficial. Luckily we were able to access the Island Health Palliative Care Team Nurse Coordinators, Palliative Care Drs, Island Health Physio and OT which were a needed addition to my Dad's circle of care. We did hire a private "companion for family care" for night shifts as Dad's condition deteriorated. He needed more care than 1 LPN and health care aid could provide for 37 clients on nights.

Dad was on the Brio Unit for 6 weeks until his passing on Friday. We are very happy that Dad was able to enjoy all that Berwick offered him. The night of his passing in his private room overlooking the calm lake, the gorgeous gardens with family surrounding him with love, music, candles and tears created a very intimate and best environment possible for his death. The staff were so caring, gentle, respectful and compassionate with our beloved Dad and family. Having jugs of ice water, tray of sweets and sandwiches was so appreciated and unexpected while we watched over him in his last hours. Thank you Berwick for your wonderful care and making the loss of our Dad a little easier for all of us.

ORIGIN AT LONGWOOD

My husband and I came to Origin a year ago. We liked the availability of different suite styles and prices. We appreciate the service from friendly staff, the availability of shuttle service for medical and mall trips and the variety of activities and events. We find the food healthy, nutritious and enjoyable and have found many new friends to share meals with. We have been impressed by consistent, sensible and effective measures to prevent the spread of viruses.

Our mother was needing a care model that provided occasional supports, meals and basic housekeeping service. She was living in her own community based condominium and was getting some of this support. She transitioned to living in Origin at Longwood, The Origin at Home Program and the awareness of the staff to support our mom in this difficult transition could not have been better. Our mom has very limited vision and she had experienced some challenging health concerns that made this move necessary. The staff were made aware of the family concerns and mom's needs. The staff at Origin at Longwood exceeded our expectations. They were very welcoming and allowed our mom to overcome her anxiety about this transition in living. Her needs are bring met in a most supportive and pleasant manner. It will soon be 4 months of living in Origin at Longwood and mom and all of our family are pleased with the facility, the staff support and the attitude of supportive assistance without anxiety or stresses. Our mom has regained her independence and has progressed from needing minor supports multiple times per day to only needing guiding assistance for outside walking. This is provided with joy and is really valued by our mom.

My mother moved into Origin a year ago. It was the best move we ever made. It is a beautiful building with many activities to keep you busy or relax in the lounge, library or spa. I can’t say enough about the staff who are all so friendly and caring. I never have to worry knowing my mother is well looked after.

This last 15 months or so have been very trying, but through it all we have been safe. No resident or staff contacted COVID 19. We were well looked after, including healthy food, great activities [that included] 9 classes of exercise, painting, games and every safety measures requested by the B.C. Govt. We are so appreciative to all our staff. They were all so kind and helpful every day, every hour while on duty. We have been so lucky to have spent the pandemic in a beautiful and safe place like Origin at Longwood. [posted to Google Reviews, August 2021]

It's an absolutely amazing facility. The philosophy of Origin is keeping seniors engaged and healthy and the staff do just that very well. The staff are helpful and always friendly. My mother resides [here] and couldn't be happier. She loves the food, the gym and swimming pool and all the other great activities!!!
