Reviews of The Sumach by Chartwell

Gain exclusive insight into life at The Sumach by Chartwell. Comfort Life’s reviews give you exclusive insider information.

Our perspective

The Sumach by Chartwell is a spectacular, still-very-new retirement destination close to the heart of Toronto. It’s an ideal place for people who love to be where the fun and excitement is. That can be found both inside the community—really all you need—and in the nearby area, where there’s all the best that Toronto has to offer.

Popular communal spaces within the community include a bistro, bar, billiards room, reading room, and lounges where you can hang out and chat with friends. The fitness studio/wellness centre is popular with residents. Highlights of the activities list include dancing, Zumba, games nights, and special events. The ninth floor walkout terrace is a fun way to get an overview of the local area. Contemporary design and construction means that everything’s spacious, with lots of natural light flooding the building. Both the building and its landscaping are a delight.

Across from Regent Park running track and the hockey rink, the area itself is an added feature. It’s an easy 5 minute walk to shops and restaurants on Dundas Street, while some residents venture to St. Lawrence Market or Distillery District, or to Cherry Beach or Sugar Beach and the lakefront. Active seniors who love the outdoors love the easy access to the Don Valley Trail.

Suites here are notably spacious, sunlit, and ultra-modern, with some wonderful views of the city and its skyline. Living here is immensely pleasurable. Staff here is credited with kindness, consideration, compassion, and helpfulness. They’re genuinely accommodating to residents’ needs, making sure seniors always feel secure, comfortable, and appreciated. Staff have gelled together since this community opened in 2019.

The most wonderful place. Beautiful new, clean building with purpose built units; good food, good activities and most of all an amazing staff that goes above and beyond. After looking into so many retirement homes, my family and I are so thrilled that we were able to get my mom a place here. Couldn't be happier.

I was looking for a residence for my Father 88 years old. Sumach was an ideal for my father. We spoke with Mike Tisiot at Sumach who was awesome, professional and caring. The entire process of meeting with us via video (we live in the USA) and then meeting with us in-person and responding to my numerous emails in detail and swiftly is commendable. As one knows moving an elderly father from his house to a new residence is stressful for the entire family and Mike made the process very smooth for us and is always available to answer any questions and work with our schedule when needed. I highly recommend Sumach and in particular Mike Tisiot.

I recently moved both of my parents into The Sumach by Chartwell. They love their new retirement residence and all of the activities that they offer.

Grant Hooper was the main person who has guided and assisted through the process. He is very kind, compassionate, is always very attentive and responds promptly. We can always rely on him to answer or questions or direct us to the appropriate person.

I highly recommend contacting Grant if you are looking for a retirement residence for yourself or for loved ones.

My husband I have lived at the Sumach from the day it opened its doors on the 1st of April 2019. We love our home, the pleasant and ever-considerate staff and the friendly and helpful residents. This is "Home". We would like to end our days here, health and finances permitting. This is a very safe and secure environment; one that gives you all the freedom you need while knowing that help is always there if and when you need it. Thank you to the wonderful staff at the Sumach.

Our family is very pleased with the treatment my mother receives at The Sumach. The staff are attentive and responsive and take excellent care of her. She is happy and secure in her new home. We could not be more pleased with the care she receives. We would not hesitate to recommend The Sumach to any senior.

I moved into the Sumach by Chartwell almost two years ago, just after it opened. I use a walker; It is not as accessible as I expected. I had hoped to age in place here. The new manager has engaged with the Occupational Therapist who services the building. He has met her here in person on several occasions. He has also done his own research about devices that will help me exit and enter.

It is getting there.

I love this diverse alive neighborhood. More and more stores are moving in: Le Beau, a to-die-for bakery, a Wine Rack, Rabba added to Sumach Espresso and Paintbox Bistro. Plus the two huge parks, one with an athletic field and a hockey rink, and the other with an outdoor bake oven, a playground and a new state of the art swimming pool. I can walk to both.

The building has an amenities floor with fitness room, a bistro, a library, a reading room, a theatre, and an outdoor terrace with a grill and a fabulous city view in all four directions.

The wellness centre staff has been more than responsive to my needs. The 24-7 concierge as well. I don't eat in the dining room but it is there if ever I need a break from cooking.

There may even be hope for a long future here.

The Sumach by Chartwell has treated us with respect, care and made the transition for our Mother and family so enjoyable. Our Mother loves her new residence and we feel comfortable she is safe and surrounded by a community of people who are there if she needs support. This residence is flexible and suitable for individuals who are capable of independent living but require some lite support, over time if needed services can be layered on as needed, it is not an all or nothing plan which is perfect for our Mom who has plenty of road ahead. Thank you Grant Hooper for your amazing support and genuine kindness, you really made this move easy on the entire family especially during Covid.

My family has experienced excellent service at The Sumach. We have been provided with high-quality assistance; a range of issues were solved quickly and effectively. The staff is friendly and helpful. Grant Hooper has devoted his full attention to the matter while helping my parent feel genuinely welcome, comfortable, and appreciated. It has been a pleasure working with Grant; he knows how to approach a customer, how to hear his/her concerns, and how to solve issues. I highly recommend The Sumach.

The process of moving into The Sumach was very smooth - and the staff considerate of the new resident's concerns and particular challenges while being mindful of the other residents and their safety - especially during a pandemic! Safety first - all the way, which is much appreciated. The facililty is modern, clean and very bright and the staff are friendly and accommodating. We're hoping living at The Sumach will be just as great. A big shout out to Grant, who has been helpful, polite, patient and understanding throughout the whole move-in process.

Moving to The Sumach two years ago was a good decision as I am an active 60's individual who continues to do contract work for health care organizations. My suite is a perfect size, light-filled and spacious with a terrific view of the downtown skyline. Not only are the staff terrific, but the building and landscaping are scrupulously maintained. The communal spaces (bistro, bar, billiards room, reading room, lounges, fitness studio and 9th floor gorgeous terrace) are well designed and decorated. A real community of active and engaged residents has formed both internally (committees, activity groups, clubs) and (pre-pandemic) externally in the revitalized Regent Park where there are opportunities for meaningful volunteerism. I really enjoy the location as it is close to the Don Valley Trail, Distillery District, UnderPass Park Farmers Market, Cabbagetown and a pleasant walk to Cherry Beach, St. Lawrence Market and (non-Covid 19 time) lots of theatres, restaurants and clubs. A concern regarding the unreliable internet speed is being addressed and we look forward to the providers' upgrade of 50 mbps and each suite receiving a new 5G modem. I highly recommend The Sumach!

Our family has experienced excellent service at Sumach by Chartwell. The staff has cared for our parents so well through the moving process a year and a half ago and since helped them settle in with a friendly and efficient level of service. They already feel like they’re in a micro community of their own with their new friends who work patiently to answer questions and coordinate multiple resident needs from the front desk, the restaurant staff and even maintenance who never turns them away even when he’s busy!

Through this global pandemic the teamwork of the staff done a stellar job in keeping everyone safe! As safety remains paramount, they continue to prove their commitment as they maintain safety procedures to ensure everyone’s well being.

We have nothing but good experiences to share about this residence to date. As this management team settles in to the relatively new scene, the lifestyle at this location will only improve over time. When lockdowns are lifted and the programs resume, our mom will go back to her Tuesday evening line dancing, Zumba or both of them may join games nights or perhaps special events at the restaurant! The potential is exponential!

The convenience of the TTC, walkable options coupled with a fresh new building this may become “the place to be” for anyone 55+!
