June is Seniors' Month

A look at seniors-related events from across the country.

Across Canada, provinces, cities and towns are celebrating Seniors' Month. We can’t possibly cover all the events held in Canada but here is a broad overview including some events you should know about:

In Port Alberni, BC, the 23rd Annual Seniors’ Week runs from June 1 to 8, kicking off Seniors’ Month in that area. Many activities are planned, including a pancake breakfast to start things off at Alberni Valley Lions Club, June 1 at 9 am. Many local businesses will be offering additional discounts in honour of the special month.

June 3rd is an especially active day as there will be games and fitness activities held at Echo Centre. If that’s not your thing there is also a tour of the watershed or an arts tour at Abbeyfield.

Friday June 6th, you can try dragon boat paddling or have a tea at Rainbow Gardens. There are numerous other activities planned throughout the week.

In Kitimat, numerous activities are planned for Seniors' Week which runs through June 7th.

In Edmonton, summer fun aint just for the young. Edmonton's newest addition to its lineup of summer festivals is The Creative Age Festival, in honor of Seniors’ Month. The festival celebrates the arts and aging and will run from June 2 to 8 in conjunction with Senior's Week.

Christy Morin is the producer of the festival. Her goal is to bring together seniors from Edmonton and surrounding area together in a celebration of their creative side. "It's their time to come out and play," says Morin. The festival will include film screenings, standup comedy workshops and classes in painting and sculpture. Also included will be a daylong symposium June 3. A Celebration of Creative Aging (held at Telus Centre, University of Alberta campus) will feature keynote speaker Susan Perlstein of the National Centre fro Creative Aging. You can see a full schedule here.

All events are free.

In Niagara Falls, Ontario, Aileen Carroll, Minister Responsible for Seniors and Kim Craitor, MPP for Niagara Falls have officially kicked off Seniors' Month in Niagara-on-the-Lake and will also launch a website dedicated to seniors.

Windsor, Ontario’s Seniors’ Day (Thursday June 5th) will be held at Centres for Seniors Windsor, 635 McEwan Ave. The CBC’s Tony Coucette will be the noontime speaker and there will be other interactive seminars. Topics will include fitness, baking, gardening, Internet savvy and more. Rosters are filling up fast so call 519-254-1108 or stop in at the McEwan Centre or Edward Street Centre, 1150 Edward St.
