Think staying in your own home is independence? Think again!

One Ottawa senior begs to differ

In the Comfort Life Spotlight

Many seniors assume that living on their own is the way to keep their independence, without thinking about what that really means. Is doing everything on your own really independence? Is cooking meals, cleaning your own living space, and finding things to do every day to keep yourself busy truly freedom

Gwen Boyles is one Ottawa senior who sees things differently. For her, life at Alavida Lifestyles’ Park Place Seniors’ Suites is true independence. “Living in a retirement home gives you more freedom, more things to do, and more people to be with. I really encourage people not to be so feisty about staying in their house because this is much better. This is freedom.”

How Park Place rethinks independence

Rethinking independence is just one aspect of the way Alavida Lifestyles rethinks senior living. They create communities throughout the Ottawa Region that enhance lives at all stages — from independent living to assisted levels of care. Aging is a natural part of life, but it can be most enjoyed in a setting that’s ideally suited to who you are. The continuum of care available at Park Place and other Alavida Lifestyles locations allows seniors to live their life their way, regardless of any care they require. Every stage of life can be beautiful, and Park Place shows this can be true, as Gwen Boyles will tell you.

“The people here, and the services, it all works together,” she says. “The housekeepers are wonderful, the servers in the dining room are amazing. They care about you. It gives you a sense of completeness.”

Of course, she herself adds to that fullness, as do all the people in a community like Park Place. Whitney Coccimiglio, Lifestyle Director there, puts it this way: "Transition can be a very overwhelming thing! Our residents and team members are so warm and welcoming—come spend a few minutes in our lobbies and you will quickly see for yourself!"

If there are any restrictions to the way you are living now, you’re not really living your best life, and you’re certainly not independent, right? Is it, perhaps, time for you to rethink what independence means? Like others at Alavida Lifestyles communities, Gwen will indeed say yes.

“My apartment is huge, there is a pond to walk around, the experimental farm is beside me. There’s always something to do.” Her enthusiasm for the life she’s living there includes using the gym twice a day. “You just keep moving,” she says.

“Alavida Lifestyles really opens doors for you. They give you so many options as to things you can do. That’s what I like. You can choose to do them or not.” Options, choices, and freedom … don’t those things sound like true independence?
