A spectrum of choices from active living to long-term care

The number of retirement home choices on the market is increasing all the time in response to an aging population that demands more freedom of choice all the time. By 2017, it is estimated that people 65 and older will account for 13 percent of the Canadian population. In addition, these people will be much healthier, savvier - and wealthier - than seniors of any previous generation.

In response, the retirement home industry is offering an unprecedented spectrum of options that appeal to an increasingly varied market. Here's a brief look at some of the most popular options and some of the most popular things that people are looking for in a retirement home. To learn more about any of these, click on the linked text.

The spectrum of independence and care

Active adult retirement communities are projected to be the dominant trend in retirement living over the next decade. This option appeals to boomers and zoomers who wish to pursue interests and activities they may have previously had to pass on. This option allows them to live in community with their peers, retaining independence. These types of communities can have on-site golf courses and much more.

Independent living retirement homes may provide 65 plus adults with meals and some basic services such as laundry, etc., but – as the name implies- seniors are mainly independent. Adults in these homes may not require medical help regularly but that option may be offered as an extra expense or residents may wish to hire their own help.

Assisted living retirement homes are suited to seniors who may require some aid with some regular activities like meal preparation, laundry and medication but who are otherwise independent.

Long term care and Alzheimer's Care retirement homes, while not necessarily synonymous are both at the high end of care requirements and daily or monthly costs. In both these instances, seniors will require extensive attention from medical staff.

Some ownership options:

The spectrum of ownership options is as follows:

Retirement condos offer full ownership to residents. Retirement condos may be found in a townhouse complex or an apartment tower.

Life lease is a very popular option, where tenancy is lease that provides special considerations for seniors.

Seniors' apartments can come in a variety of forms, whether that is a unit in a tower or a rental unit in side a retirement home.

This is but a small sample of the many variations you can find in retirement living today. If none of these meet your interest, please view the many options available in our advanced retirement home search.
