The Village of Winston Park
Winston Park is a vibrant community of seniors that (like other Schlegel Villages) creates an idealized small town under one roof. Walk into Winston Park in the middle of the day, or on a Saturday morning, and you will be struck by the amount of activity and interaction among the "villagers." These people know how to live! Inside the "village" you will find a general store, a restaurant, a gift shop, a library and a gym… all of them with signage and separate entrances. People walk from shop to shop, greet friends by name and chat up the local "shopkeepers."
Suites are clean and modern, hallways are wide and clean. The people are happy and friendly, because the environment engenders community and contentment. In keeping with the village theme, discrete care areas are called neighbourhoods. Winston Park includes a memory care neighbourhood, as well as a long term care ward. Hundreds of residents meet in the village "commons" every day and greet each other with smiles.read review
The Village of Tansley Woods
One of several Schlegel Villages that supersedes the institutionalized feel traditionally associated with seniors' care homes. Schlegel is focused on implementing a culture change around senior care and retirement home living. "Open concept" is a nice enough idea, but The Village of Tansley Woods goes above and beyond this, truly creating a small town feel under a dry roof. Inside the village, there's a chapel, general store, beauty salon and barber shop, along with spacious lounges and a tenth floor restaurant called the Ruby.
As with all Schlegel Villages, care provided benefits from the company's association with the Research Institute for Aging (RIA), at University of Waterloo. The village is split into several neighbourhoods, each focused around specific care needs. Just like regular neighbourhoods, these become small, friendly communities where neighbours share concerns and interests. Families and seniors who are part of the village love it here.read review

The Village of Humber Heights
Among the many hallmarks of life at The Village of Humber Heights, the protection of seniors' health is paramount. Part of Schlegel Villages, Humber Heights offers a range of care from independent living to a memory care neighbourhood. In this area, residents with dementia receive some of the best care possible in the province of Ontario, thanks to Schlegel's partnership with the Research Institute for Aging at the University of Waterloo.
Like other Schlegel Villages, this residence is built around the concept of an old-fashioned small town. Residents can walk down the "main street" to the "town square," where there is a library, an indoor café, a general store, a chapel and more. All of this creates, in fact, a bustling "village centre" where "old friends" meet up, chat and visit. Every day is like that, in this seniors' village.
Staff here focus on offering resident-centred care, where the needs of senior clients come first. When you read employee reviews of working at the Heights, many call it "an amazing place to work." That collective attitude helps make this an amazing place to live, for the seniors here.read review
The Village of Taunton Mills
This lives up to the title of village much more than residence or seniors' home. The layout of the building follows very much from the idea of a small town, its central town square holding a number of "shops" to browse and meet up with friends. Places you'll find in the village centre (a commons area) include a library, a theatre, a café, a general store and a pub. Unlike most Ontario towns, though, there's never any cold weather or rain. It has to be seen to be believed.
Levels of care available in the Village of Taunton Mills range from independent to assisted living. Assistance in Schlegel Villages does not apply a cookie-cutter approach, however. The individual needs of residents are looked at, and care offered is resident-centred. The attitude of staff here is not that seniors live where the staff works, but "we work in your home."read review

This unique approach to a seniors-friendly environment includes an indoor café, general store, hairdresser, library and other outlets. The "village" concept extends to the notion of residents living in neighbourhoods, where every hallway or wing is a close community of people with similar care needs. The care continuum here extends from independent living for adults who require minimal assistance, to dementia care and long term care.
Although many retirement homes listed at Comfort Life feature excellent staff, the care staff at Riverside Glen demonstrates an above-and-beyond attitude apparent to outsiders. The Village newsletter, a monthly publication, demonstrates a deep, rich understanding of residents, and shows care and attention extended to all seniors here. Care is enhanced by the latest research into enhancing senior lifestyle and caring for those with special assistance requirements, from Schlegel's close association with the Research Institute for Aging.read review

Bowmanville Creek Retirement Community offers independent and assisted living. This community focuses on providing top tier services and care for an affordable rate. What you might not expect, though, is to see how much fun people have just being here and enjoying the activities. So often, there's a bridge or euchre game being played in the lounge. Elsewhere, a couple of fellows will be gathered around the pool table or a viewing party will happen spontaneously in the movie theatre.
Care within the community is an area where Bowmanville Creek truly succeeds. Response to calls is immediate. And staff are just as generous in handing out hugs as they are in giving the professional care people require. Your wellness is encouraged in on-site exercise classes. "Stately elegance" is a phrase that comes to mind when you drive up to the Waverley Mansion in London, in the Carfrae Park area of London. This converted Victorian mansion is indeed converted into a genuine home for the people living here. We love the elegance and uniqueness of the Victorian interior. Classical glass doors, jambs and other interior features are ornately decorated in styles that need to be seen to be appreciated. For all the luxury, there is an intimacy implicit in the fact that this is essentially a house.
Once you're inside, another aspect becomes more apparent: that this is a caring community. That starts with the friendliness of staff. It's also seen in the care they give clients, and exemplified most richly in times where they take the opportunity to show great compassion for those in their care.read review
Modern interiors and in-house features are great to have in a retirement home, of course. But what you're really looking for is the feeling of welcome, caring people around you and a hundred other little things that make your new place into a real home. That's what seniors in community at Palermo Village cite as the big difference between this and other places in the area. A welcoming and comforting atmosphere is not something you can view in a brochure or on a website, it needs to be experienced in person.
That comforting atmosphere is added to by the setting, the building itself. There's a theme of brightness and vivacity to the layout of this community. That translates into an easy transition for many of the people who choose to live here, and into confidence by family members, knowing that they have found a great new home for the one they love.read review
River Road Retirement Residence
River Road Retirement Residence offers a number of singular delights, from its spectacular views of the Niagara River to its spacious, clean and welcoming interiors. There are a lot of things to love about this place, but you're most likely to be immediately taken with the spectacular view of the river and gorge. It's just a short walk to the Whirlpool Aero Car, with its lookout area, just across from Great Wolf Lodge. Of course, Horseshoe Falls is a short drive up the road the other way. The local beauty makes it extra appealing for families to visit here.
But then inside … well! We were impressed with the open concept main floor that includes two fireplace rooms, games room and dining lounge. Interiors are all very well-kept and clean. If you are looking for classical elegance in a local community, you will find it here, with prices remarkably lower than you will pay for a similarly well-appointed retirement community further along the QEW in the GTA. The phrase "hidden gem" comes to mind. It's even perfectly situated five minutes outside of downtown Niagara. We think it makes a wonderful place to visit and to be in.read review

There are also garden parties in the summer and frequent outings in downtown Manotick, where every convenience you'll need is readily available.
