Live-in managers provide 24/7 care at Holiday retirement residences

“My dad fell in the room and banged his head pretty bad,” said John Grady, whose parents are Holiday residents. “My mom pulled the emergency cord and the team was there within two minutes. They had dad situated in no time. The value of the establishment was never more evident than that morning as we would have spent much of our Sunday in the hospital emergency ward had they not been in the care of the community.”

A distinctive feature at each of the 34 Holiday Retirement communities in Canada is the presence of 24/7 live-in managers. Should residents have an emergency situation, they can pull the cord in their apartment and a manager will respond within minutes.

Holiday Retirement offers independent living apartments for seniors who do not require around-the-clock assistance or skilled nursing typical of assisted-living or nursing home facilities.

Instead, Holiday focuses on helping residents enjoy a carefree lifestyle free from many of the daily hassles such as cooking, cleaning and driving. Holiday communities provide residents with comfortable private apartments plus other benefits including three chef-prepared meals daily, enriching activities and transportation and housekeeping services.

To provide an additional level of safety and comfort, each community has two sets of managers who work and live among the residents. They oversee the community’s day-to-day operations and offer a reassuring level of security to residents by monitoring the 24/7 emergency call systems located in each apartment.

Providing peace of mind

Live-in managers not only provide a tremendous service for residents – they also offer peace-of-mind for loved ones.

“The community has been a dream comes true for us,” said Kathie McCauley whose father lives in a Holiday community. “We never have to worry about him and when we visit, everyone is very welcoming. It’s making my dad's elder years very enjoyable.”

“I sleep much better at night knowing my parents are well-fed, clean and safe,” said Sharon Vild, whose parents are Holiday residents.

One big extended family

Beyond safety and stability, live-in managers are also able to connect with residents and their families on a deeply personal level because they interact daily.

“We all became one big, extended family,” said Robert Olszewski, whose mother lived at a Holiday Retirement community. “They (live-in managers) generate genuine warmth with the residents.”

Residents appreciate live-in managers for their friendly and welcoming presence. It’s comforting to know that someone is always watching out for them.

“They go the extra five miles over and beyond their duties to create a home environment for us all,” said one Holiday resident.

Who are Holiday's live-in managers?

Holiday Retirement’s live-in managers often are married couples but can also be siblings, partners or roommates. They typically choose this career for the chance to work alongside loved ones and for the opportunity to affect real change in the lives of so many seniors and families.

Live-in managers enjoy a generous benefits package that includes a free on-site apartment, all-utilities paid (except phone service), free meals, housekeeping and linen service in addition to a competitive salary, 401(k), paid vacation and holidays, medical and dental insurance, and more.

Managers also are welcome to take advantage of Holiday’s exclusive travel programme, which allows them to stay free of charge for up to seven nights at nearly all of Holiday Retirement’s more than 300 communities throughout North America.

For the majority of live-in managers, however, the greatest benefit is helping seniors relish the carefree lifestyle they’ve earned.

“Making a difference in the resident’s life is what matters,” said Stacy Fuller, a live-in manager along with husband Mike. “And they make a difference in ours. It’s why we are successful. You can get an apartment anywhere, but who will love you? We treat them all like you’d want your own mother to be treated.”
