We're impressed with the changes coming to the Erinview. The new building opening in 2019 promises spaciousness everywhere. This should be something special, really: a completely new living environment surrounded by an established neighbourhood, with beautiful older homes on tree-lined streets.

This residence is ideal for families in Mississauga, Milton, Oakville and elsewhere in the west end of the GTA. It's managed by a company with a long history of excellence. It's cozy, clean, well-established and newly renovated, featuring independent and assisted living at very reasonable basic fees.

This retirement residence is ideal for many reasons but it's well-suited to Ottawa Region seniors who want to remain close to the action, whether that means closeness to the downtown core, to life in the Glebe, or to the suburbs in the west of Ottawa. If your children or grandchildren live in Nepean, Kanata, or anywhere else in west Ottawa, it's ideal. Moving here puts snow shovelling, lawn maintenance and other dull household work into the hands of others.

  • The Redwoods Retirement Residence (click to open)
    2604 Draper Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario, K2H 9B1

Ottawa offers many retirement living options but few of them as stable as The Redwoods. In an industry susceptible to staff turnover, the Redwoods rightly boasts about staff retention and how happy people are working here. This can be very important for seniors in care, who like to know the person giving them care. Staff have a chance to grow familiar with residents, readily remembering names and personal preferences. The personal familiarity among serving staff, nursing staff, personal support workers and reception staff, who have often worked together for years, also benefits the whole community.

The Redwoods is ideal for Ottawa-area seniors who want the best in life, living in community with other seniors, close to family in Kanata, Nepean or elsewhere in the west end of Ottawa. For seniors who have had a health scare, or who simply want to make housework a thing of the past, it's an excellent choice: a friendly community of peers in a building that's a safe, warm, and wonderful place to live.

What people love about life at Granville Gardens is the many different spaces available to pamper yourself in different ways. There are spaces where you can indulge in art, another room where you can do chair yoga or work on a jigsaw puzzle (by yourself or with a partner), quiet spots to have a chat or read by yourself, a movie theatre where you can watch the latest TV offering … You can really create a complete life, a new life, within the walls of Granville Gardens. Of course, outside there's so much more to do, including neighbourhood strolls with the walking club, shopping, restaurants and lovely Kerrisdale parkland.

The great thing about this new life, of course, is that you don't have to do your own cooking or housecleaning, and there are always people standing by to offer your assistance or care … whatever you need. For those who have worked hard for themselves all their lives, it can be hard to accept a helping hand, but once you get used to it (and admit that maybe you deserve it), there is nothing like the life you will find at Granville Gardens.

Adult children of community members here appreciate the depth of understanding that staff develop for seniors in their care. The staff here is highly praised for their compassion and attention to detail. Care is focused on support and maintaining the dignity of people in care. The safety and security of knowing that parents are well looked after allows you to go home at the end of a visit feeling stress-free, knowing that parents are in good hands. You'll be pleased with how they are able to take time out of their busy day to deal with any deeper questions you have.

Innovation and newness are a hallmark of life at Port Credit Residences. This was one of the first GTA communities to employ the Brain Gym program, which helps train seniors in improving their memory and handling stress. The program even throws in some physical exercise. The availability of the community's nurse practitioner was also a Toronto first, when the building opened in 2011. Visiting "therapy dogs" are one more aspect of life at Port Credit Residences that make this community stand out. This place is ideal for progressive-minded Mississauga and GTA seniors looking for "something a little different."

One of the trademarks of this and other Verve communities is the careful attention staff is able to give to residents. "Helpful," "courteous," "patient" and "informative are just a few of the adjectives that seniors and family members use to describe care staff, nursing staff and the doctor here.

Choice and selection also abound, when it comes to the dining menu and the activities available at the Richmond. If the variety of choices is just right, there's also abundant quality found in those selections. Residents especially enthuse over the meals.

Both family members and the seniors who live here list the most striking quality of this community as "the genuine friendliness of the staff" … their eagerness to please. And when it comes right down to it, that's the most important aspect of any retirement community. A clean, healthy environment with great food and fun activities is always important (Credit River has all those things!) but ultimately there's nothing better than being surrounded by people willing to go out of their way to make every day the best it can be.

Skill and empathy are the buzzwords you'll hear when seniors and family members describe staff here. What's really noticeable is how care is enhanced with kindness and a personal touch, a core value of Verve, as seen in more of their communities. As one further indication of this expertise in care, Richmond Hill Retirement Residence welcomes convalescent stays and respite care. In the end, the net effect of this a caring community, where kindness is contagious and spreads generously among community members. And then again, there's no price tag you can put on truly compassionate treatment. The Village is widely praised for the way staff treats residents. "Friendly" and "helpful" are terms used as a matter of course by family members, when describing the staff here. There's nothing better than hearing that your senior loved one loves where they live.

Holland Gardens will notably offer a full continuum of care, a unique service in the area. This will allow independent seniors to move in on their own and acquire care as they need it. This creates an opportunity for couples who have different care requirements, who want to live together in the same building.

This also promises excellent food and dining. Seniors who come in to look at the community get a preview of that when they are treated to a High Tea or a Strawberry Social. Carrotfest will be another success. Making the move out of a traditional family home into a senior living community is challenging but we find that Holland Gardens makes it very inviting!

Spacious communal areas and brightly lit interiors are part and parcel of life here, and in the Manor that will be especially evident. Bright sunlight pouring in through that bank of windows will put everyone in a great mood. The progressive approach carries over to the community, where people are encouraged to personalize their suites, pets are allowed, and more.

Spiritual welfare is a unique focus of Presentation Manor. You’ll find a Catholic chapel with daily Mass; of course, people of all faith backgrounds are welcome. Residents are encouraged to participate in Mass but more importantly, to take an interest in each other’s personal and spiritual wellbeing. The Manor promises to bring state-of-the-art senior care to the Clairlea/ Birchmount Park area.
