What is independent living in Guelph?

Independent living, as the name implies, allows seniors to explore new freedoms. It's ideal for people who are cognitively and physically healthy, but may want relief from mundane chores. Typically, this includes cooking, housekeeping and laundry. Some communities provide additional care services as needed. This can include medication administration, or dressing and mobility support. Nurses and PSWs are on-site to support residents’ needs, so that they can spend their retirement doing the things they enjoy. And there's so much to do

Here’s a quick look at some of the benefits of independent living in Guelph:

Small-town feel

Some retirement communities listed above are designed to emulate a village. Every service and amenity you could wish for is within walking distance from your suite! Picture the idyllic small town: a local coffee shop, a quaint general store, a community library, a spa, and a friendly hairdresser. All of these services are provided in independent living retirement communities.

Continuum of care

Many communities listed above offer different levels of lifestyle options. Each come with different levels of care, from independent living to memory care and long-term care. You won’t have to make another big move in the future if your care needs change. You can rest assured knowing that you will have access to a nurse, PSW or specialist, when needed.

Note that this description is generalized and may not apply to all communities listed above.

Enhanced senior care, backed by research

Guelph gives residents access to all the fabulous benefits of the Research Institute on Aging (RIA). The RIA is a non-profit organization aimed at enhancing the quality of life and care of older adults. It was founded at the nearby University of Waterloo, and now partners with Conestoga College and many of the retirement homes listed above. Essentially, the RIA applies research findings to the real world. They partner with seniors and care professionals to conduct research. Then, they use their findings to develop resources, programs and education. Residing at an independent living facility in Guelph means you may have a role in helping to improve the quality of life of seniors just like you!
