Our Perspective

How we see Governors Walk Retirement Residence - Metta Lifestyles

Governors Walk's setting in a historic monastery in the established New Edinburgh neighbourhood hints at the disciplined compassion, soulful community, and peaceful living you'll find here. The care here caters to people’s needs, served enthusiastically by the staff. It offers a grounded, holistic approach to senior living.

Health services offered are multifarious, including continence care. Medication management and care services are included where needed, of course, but it’s administered as part of a focus on healthy living. Programming includes mind, body, and soul, with each aspect well-accounted for by activities available within this community. Alongside more prosaic things like card games, Bingo and Bocce ball, life-enriching events include outings to local theatres and museums, as close to Ottawa’s heart as this community is.

Community’s Perspective

How Governors Walk Retirement Residence - Metta Lifestyles sees itself

Who are you as a community?

Nestled in New Edinburgh, Governors Walk is steps away from the picturesque Rideau River and Stanley Park. A former monastery and friary, Governors Walk is designed to pay respect to the past while featuring a modern touch. Offering a wide range of suite styles and options to suit every senior's taste and designed to maximize independence. Our health and wellness team provide all the comforts and reassurance you will need to live an active and social lifestyle.

What do you do differently or uniquely well?

We offer a true continuum of care in a setting that still feels warm and personal. From assisted living to memory care, we’re able to support residents in a way that evolves with them. Our focus is always on balancing professional care with a strong sense of community, so residents feel both supported and genuinely at home.

What supports do you offer residents as they adjust to life there?

We take a very hands-on, thoughtful approach to helping new residents settle in. From the beginning, we spend time getting to know you—your routines, preferences, and what brings you comfort. Our team helps guide you through daily life here, making introductions and creating opportunities to connect, so those first weeks feel welcoming and reassuring and much less overwhelming.

How are residents supported if their needs change?

Thanks to our continuum of care, we can seamlessly adjust care, without requiring residents to leave the community they’ve come to know. We revisit care plans with residents and families and make thoughtful adjustments that reflect their current needs. This flexible approach allows residents to feel secure, supported, and comfortable no matter what their care needs.

Under what conditions would you advise someone against choosing your community?

Governors Walk may not be the right fit for someone wanting an independent lifestyle with little to no support, or for someone requiring long-term care. We’re best suited for those who value a supportive environment with care, connection, and daily engagement part of everyday life.

What might residents find surprising about your community?

People are surprised by our ability to combine compassionate care with lively daily life. While strong support services are a given, they might not anticipate the sense of community, the welcoming atmosphere, and the variety of daily experiences that make life here full and engaging.

How will your community change in the next five years?

We’ll continue to build on our strengths—enhancing care services, expanding programming, and finding new ways to support residents’ independence and well-being. We’re always evolving, but our focus will remain the same: creating a community where residents feel comfortable, supported, and truly at home.

What five facts about your community should people know?

We offer a continuum of care, including assisted living and memory care.
Our approach is resident-centred, with flexible care tailored to individual needs.
We focus on creating a warm, welcoming environment that feels like home.
We provide opportunities for daily engagement, connection, and activity.
Metta Lifestyles family is committed to quality care and community.

  • I don't think I could find a better place to live.

In December 2021 I started my fourth year at Governors Walk. Every day I feel fortunate to live in such a wonderful home where the staff at all levels is caring, sensitive and competent.

My suite as well as all common areas are kept clean, the dining room is attractive and the food well above average.

My husband was bedridden for 2 months and died in September 2021. The care and affection he received were exceptional.

I don't think I could find a better place to live.
