Assisted living is mostly privatized in Ontario, making it essentially different from long term care, which is subsidized by the provincial government (but which also requires time on a waiting list*). There are some assisted living communities in Ontario subsidized under government programs, but even among these, the better-quality communities require prospective residents to spend time on a waiting list. Still other communities may be associated with churches or other charities, but these will also have special requirements in order to get accepted.
High quality assisted living facilities in Ontario charge higher rates but they often offer much more than people imagine possible. Many of these communities focus on offering the very best care and services, and there are added benefits to making the extra commitment. Privately run assisted living retirement communities in Ontario, (whose costs are sampled below) do not require time on a waiting list and readily accept new community members.

What's the average cost of assisted living in Ontario?

We calculated the average cost of assisted living in Ontario from private retirement homes listed with ComfortLife.ca. Bear in mind that all your costs of living are included: food, care and all other monthly costs (heat, hydro, taxes, upkeep, etc.) Added benefits are the community life, the easy socialization and the renewed enthusiasm for life that comes from having basic care needs taken on by others.
Below, is a look at assisted living costs in some of Ontario's major cities.
Toronto and the GTA
The costs of assisted senior living apartments in Toronto vary greatly, depending on several factors:
- The quality of the community, which may be affected by many variables, such as how recently it has been updated (find newly renovated communities) or built (find new communities) as well as the quality of the overall construction, its amenities and features, etc.
- Help you require with ADLs. Most communities in the Greater Toronto Area list a basic cost for assisted living care, then charge extra based on specific needs (help with feeding, bathing, etc.) Some, however, do include some care services (see variations below).
- Real estate values, which depend on proximity to the city center and some other factors.

In the national capital region, assisted living options vary quite widely, depending on several key factors:
- As a general rule, the closer you get to the city center, retirement home costs will increase, parallel to an increase in real estate values.
- Care you require for activities of daily living (ADLs), that typically precipitates the need for this level of care.
- The quality of the facilities which can vary widely, of course. Some of the sample costs below are taken from the Ottawa Region's more exceptional quality communities.
