Our Perspective

How we see The Village of Winston Park

Winston Park will revise your ideas about senior living homes. Lively, clean, spacious, friendly, caring… there are many more superlatives that could be added. Schlegel has over 50 years of experience in owning, managing, and operating seniors' housing in Ontario, and works closely with the Research Institute for Aging in Waterloo. They're at the forefront of senior care in Ontario, and their forward-thinking shines through at Winston Park.

It's a vibrant community of seniors that (like other Schlegel Villages) creates an idealized small town under one roof. Walk into Winston Park in the middle of the day, or a Saturday morning, and you'll be struck by the amount of activity and interaction among the "villagers." These people know how to live! Inside the village you'll find a general store, a restaurant, a gift shop, a library, and a gym… all of them with signage and separate entrances. Every day in the village "commons," people greet each other with smiles and a friendly 'hello.'

Suites at Winston Park are clean and modern. Hallways are wide and clean. The people are happy and friendly, because the environment engenders community and contentment. In keeping with the village theme, discrete care areas are called neighbourhoods.  There's a memory care neighbourhood, as well as a long-term care building.

Community’s Perspective

How The Village of Winston Park sees itself

Who are you as a community?

Experience exceptional care at the Village of Winston Park. From Independent Apartments with full kitchens, to Full-Service Retirement and Assisted Care suites with walk-out patios, and specialized Memory and Long-Term Care — we offer living options to suit every stage of life. Discover why we say, “It Takes a Village to Care.” Join our vibrant, compassionate community and find the perfect place to call home.

What do you do differently or uniquely well?

At The Village of Winston Park, the Schlegel Villages philosophy is expressed through a true village model of living and care. Daily life is built around connection, choice, and meaningful relationships between residents, families, and team members. Shared spaces, neighbourhood design, and consistent staff presence help create a setting where residents feel known and supported while maintaining as much independence as possible.

What supports do you offer residents as they adjust to life there?

When someone moves in, the transition is supported by our Village Experience Coordinator, Resident Support Coordinator and the resident welcoming committee members.. Shared meals, warm gathering spaces, and the rhythm of daily village life make it easier for new residents to quickly feel at home in their surroundings. Team members learn residents’ preferences, routines, and interests so new people can feel comfortable and confident. Opportunities to participate in activities, programs, and everyday conversations help residents build connections and quickly develop a sense of belonging within the village.

How are residents supported if their needs change?

We offer a full continuum of living and care options within the same village. Residents can access independent apartments, retirement living, assisted care, memory care, and long-term care as their needs evolve. This approach allows seniors to remain in a familiar environment with the support of professional care teams while continuing relationships within the village.

Under what conditions would you advise someone against choosing your community?

Winston Park may not be the right fit for someone looking for a very private or independent lifestyle. Life in the Village is designed to feel like a small town, where relationships, shared spaces, and daily interaction are part of the experience. Residents should also be comfortable living in a community where fellow neighbours have a variety of different care needs. We are a full continuum of care Village and we strive to make it a place where everyone belongs. We’re best suited for people who want to be part of a community—to know their neighbours, to be known by name, and to live in a place where connection and belonging are part of everyday life.

What might residents find surprising about your community?

Residents are surprised by how soon they are known personally, and how welcoming the community feels. Many families are surprised by the warmth and relationship focus of the atmosphere, once they spend time in the village. The level of engagement—from activities and social opportunities to everyday conversations—often stands out as something people did not expect from a retirement community.

How will your community change in the next five years?

In the coming years, Winston Park will continue strengthening the village model that has guided the community from the beginning. The focus will remain on compassionate care, strong relationships, and opportunities for residents to remain active and connected as their needs change. Future developments are expected to build on the established continuum of care while preserving the sense of belonging that defines village life.

What five facts about your community should people know?

Offers independent apartments, retirement living, assisted care, memory care, and long-term care.
Part of the Schlegel Villages family of communities, built around the philosophy that “It Takes a Village to Care.”
Features a Town Square and Main Street layout that encourages daily connection and activity.
Designed to support aging in place within one connected village community.

Dementia & Memory Care (definition)

Emma's neighbourhood is designed for residents living with memory loss and offers care and recreation programs specifically designed for those with Alzheimer's Disease and other related forms of dementia. Residents will enjoy private time in either a studio or one-bedroom suite, while also having access to gathering spaces and programs in the Neighbourhood, as well as larger Village programs on Main Street. At Schlegel Villages, we believe there is no “loss of self”, but rather a “change in self” with the progression of dementia. Our Signature Program, LIVING in My Today, supports people living with dementia as they tap into their strengths, express themselves and enjoy the comfort and security of friendships in a place where they experience acceptance and belonging. Our emphasis on developing relationships while understanding the experience of those living with dementia forms the foundation of The Five Pillars of LIVING in My Today: (MEETS) Meaningful and Active Engagement, Enjoyable Mealtimes, Empowered Care Partners, Thoughtful Design and Supportive Approaches. Our dedicated team works with and cares for residents, supporting them to live well each day, regardless of what that day looks like. We’re proud of the foundation we’ve built in LIVING in My Today and the extensive work and collaboration that brought the program to life.
