Our Perspective

How we see OPAL Vancouver

OPAL represents an exciting new vision in senior care, offering superior senior living, with an upscale modern design and up-to-the minute technology, in an intergenerational living environment. This building, the flagship of Element Lifestyle Retirement Inc., has excited us here at Comfort Life, since we first heard about it in 2016.

Opened in June 2020, OPAL by Element incorporates all of the best elements of contemporary senior living. Amenities and services include chef-prepared meals, an onsite spa and beauty salon, an interior pub, rooftop patios, and an ongoing list of other features. The design includes 30,000 square feet of very unique innovations indoor and outdoor. These include a rock salt wall for yoga exercises and tai chi, a full-service wellness spa for daily rejuvenation, and an interior IT centre. Versatile care staff and facilities provide a complete continuum of care, from independent living to memory care and long term care.

For all those impressive features, the front and centre attraction here is dining and culinary features. OPAL offers an in-house program where residents can engage in cooking classes taught by the executive chef onsite. There will also be a communal table for dining with larger groups of friends, as well as private dining and living rooms. The variety of authentic cuisine ranges from ethnic dishes like aburi sashimi and sushi, to a menu of locally supplied farm-to table foods. In addition to the great food, there are wine tastings, a water bar with fruit and herb infusions, and a High Tea Service.

What do you do differently or uniquely well?

Families choose OPAL Vancouver because it feels different the moment they walk in, warm, intimate, and genuine. Our boutique intergenerational setting creates a true sense of belonging where residents feel seen, valued, and at home. What sets us apart is our personalized approach, with every aspect of wellness, hospitality, and daily living tailored to each individual. We also offer a unique culinary experience with gourmet Western dishes and authentic Asian cuisines. With a full continuum of care, residents can remain in one supportive community as their needs change, aging in place with dignity, comfort, and choice. Our heartfelt service, gourmet dining, and recreation programs help residents live with joy every day.

What supports do you offer residents as they adjust to life there?

At OPAL Vancouver, we support residents every step of the way as they settle into their new home. Our 24-hour Concierge team helps coordinate move-in details, while our Wellness, Recreation, and Hospitality teams work closely with each resident to understand their routines, preferences, and comfort needs. New residents are personally introduced to residence neighbors, staff, and community activities to help them build connections right away. Families tell us they choose OPAL because the transition feels gentle, thoughtful, and genuinely caring where their loved one is welcomed not just as a resident, but as part of a warm and inclusive community.

How are residents supported if their needs change?

At Opal, residents are supported with a true continuum of care, allowing them to remain within the community they know and trust even as their needs change. When additional support is required, residents can transition seamlessly to our secured Licensed Care, guided closely by our clinical team and supported every step of the way. Independent living residents may also join select long-term care activities to become familiar with the environment. Should families wish to bring in outside services, we help coordinate these supports to ensure comfort, dignity, and a smooth, reassuring transition.

Under what conditions would you advise someone against choosing your community?

Opal Vancouver may not be the best fit for seniors whose needs require highly specialized support beyond what our community can safely offer. This includes violent or abusive behavior, persistent wandering or aggressive behaviors that jeopardize the safety and well-being of other residents. In these situations, a more specialized care setting is often better suited. Our priority is to maintain a calm, secure, and supportive environment where every resident’s needs and values can be fully honored.

What might residents find surprising about your community?

Residents are often surprised by how personalized and elevated life feels at OPAL Vancouver. Many expect standard retirement living, but instead discover exceptional hospitality, gourmet international cuisine, authentic Chinese dishes at every meal, and even freshly made Dim Sum for breakfast. They’re also reassured to learn we offer a dedicated long-term care floor, providing secure, specialized support when complex needs arise. What truly stands out is how seamlessly comfort, culture, and care come together, creating a community that feels far beyond expectations.

How will your community change in the next five years?

In the next five years, OPAL will expand our intergenerational lifestyle to more communities. With the success of our Vancouver flagship, our Victoria location is now in pre-sale stage. These projects allow us to bring our personalized hospitality, cultural inclusion, and continuum of care to more seniors across B.C. We are also preparing to launch OPAL Daycare, further strengthening our intergenerational mission. Together, these initiatives will enhance meaningful connection, support aging with dignity, and create vibrant communities where seniors can truly thrive.

What five facts about your community should people know?

1. Dedicated Long-Term Care Floor
OPAL has its own secure, purpose-designed licensed care floor, allowing residents to age in place without leaving the community.
2. Authentic International Cuisine Every Day
Our culinary team serves freshly prepared Chinese dishes at every meal—alongside Western options, making us one of the few communities offering true cultural dining daily.
3. Innovative Technology in Action
We use smart robotics in our dining room to enhance efficiency and service, setting OPAL apart as a forward-thinking, tech-enabled senior living community.
4. Boutique, Resort-Style Living
Our award-winning, modern residence feels more like a boutique hotel than a care home, with elegant spaces and amenities that cre
