Our Perspective

How we see Canterbury Place Retirement Residence - Verve Senior Living

A hallmark of life at Canterbury Place is the contentedness and happiness of the people living here. This is found across a variety of settings. In the dining room, senior residents enjoy delectable executive-chef-prepared dishes nightly. There's entertainment in the piano room and the movie theatre. People can gather in the bistro or work out together in the fitness centre. You'll find a rich sense of community at Canterbury Place, one that heartily welcomes newcomers.

This is a spectacularly modern take on senior living that literally towers over many other senior care choices in North York and the central GTA. Seniors find rejuvenation in a community of their peers where there is so much help ready. Care available here includes regular doctor visits, a local pharmacy, nurses on staff and a regularly visiting physiotherapist.

Residents and families highlight the many exceptional qualities of staff here. Some residents tell us openly about how helpful and pleasant the staff is, while we can see the appreciation felt by others. There are recreation ladies that keep residents busy with exercise programs, craft activities, and games including brain games. On top of that, you can see management, office staff, servers, nurses all going about their jobs happily here. The net effect is the creation of a healthy, happy community. Outside, there's a walker's paradise through the streets and parkland of North York. This is a vibrant neighbourhood that includes a Farmer's Market, the North York Library and many more things to do.The upshot of all this is that inside and out, it's a wonderful place to be.

What do you do differently or uniquely well?

Our team prides ourselves in having an interpersonal approach for each resident and their needs. We understand one size doesn’t fit all and do our best to accommodate/personalize the needs of each resident. It is our collaborative approach and living the motto "It takes a Village”, that allows us to give a supportive environment to both our residents and team.

Named one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies for the third consecutive year (2023–2025) the prestigious award recognizes Verve’s proven leadership in retirement residence management, its strong and values‑driven employee culture, and its ongoing focus on innovation and exceptional resident experience across its communities.

What supports do you offer residents as they adjust to life there?

Not only is our team involved in the transition for new residents, but they are also assigned to one of our dedicated Resident Ambassadors. Our ambassadors are an additional point of contact to help assimilate them to the community.

How are residents supported if their needs change?

At Canterbury Place, residents can continue living independently while arranging additional support if their needs evolve. The residence offers independent and independent supportive living, with services that can be coordinated to assist with daily routines while residents remain in familiar surroundings and connected to the community. The goal is to help residents maintain independence while ensuring help is available when needed.

Under what conditions would you advise someone against choosing your community?

Canterbury Place tends to appeal to seniors who appreciate an active retirement lifestyle with dining, amenities, and opportunities to connect with others. Residents here enjoy shared spaces, programs, and services that make daily life comfortable and engaging. Someone seeking a very quiet setting with minimal amenities or little community interaction may find another type of residence more aligned with their preferences.

What might residents find surprising about your community?

Residents are extremely happy to be connected to a Bank and Walk-In Clinic/Pharmacy (includes dental, optometry, massage therapy and more).

How will your community change in the next five years?

In the coming years, Canterbury Place will continue building on the lifestyle residents already enjoy. The focus will remain on enhancing wellness programs, dining experiences, and opportunities for social connection while maintaining the welcoming environment and attentive service that define the community. The goal is to continue evolving in ways that support residents’ independence, wellbeing, and enjoyment of everyday life.

What five facts about your community should people know?

1) Verve Senior Living was awarded one of Canada's Best Managed Companies in 2023
2) Canterbury Place is a welcoming group of diverse team members and residents.
3)Conveniently located near Police and Fire Department
4) Minutes away from TTC, Subway and Go Transit
5) Minutes away from local Churches.

  • You all win a feather for your caps!

I am so happy to call Canterbury Place my home. I want to thank all the staff who plan and prepare all the events. The food is fabulous and more than plentiful. It’s great to hear the laughter and conversation enjoyed by family members and friends who are having an enjoyable time together.  Many, many thanks for giving us such memorable get-togethers.  There’s always something going on to take part in! I couldn’t ask for more – I’m so happy with my life here, surrounded by new friends and caring staff who do so much for us and always in a cheerful, happy way. You all win a feather for your caps!

  • Great Peace of Mind

Canterbury Place has been a blessing to my mother. During my frequent visits, I have come to know a staff who is both caring and friendly and extremely attentive to my mother’s needs. I have joined my mom in the exquisite dining room for both lunch and dinner and would compare the cuisine and service to a first class restaurant.  The many programs and daily activities offered have helped my mother maintain an active lifestyle without having to leave her beautiful surroundings. All in all, the level of service and care she receives in her new home has given me great peace of mind and I would highly recommend Canterbury Place to anyone seeking a retirement residence.

    Andre C.

  • Yes, I did make the right move!

Did I make the right move coming to Canterbury Place!  After 3 months, the whole experience has been nothing but positive. The friendliness of all the staff, fellow residents, good food, many activities and my delightful suite make life very enjoyable.

Yes, I did make the right move!

  • Canterbury Place must be very proud of the team they have.

The last five or six weeks have once again reinforced my feelings that my mother chose very wisely when she picked Canterbury Place.

I honestly cannot say enough about the Canterbury Place staff.

The care, kindness and patience that they all possess and demonstrate daily is heartwarming to experience.

Every single staff member that I have come in contact with, whether they be in maintenance, housekeeping, resident medical and personal care, dining, marketing, reception, or accounting, is a credit to their organization.

Canterbury Place must be very proud of the team they have.

Their efforts mean so much to my wife and I, and especially to my mother.

  • This is my home.

My husband had a massive stroke so we moved from our house to a condo near Yonge & Sheppard. He kept falling and I had to call 911 quite often to pick him up.

Whenever I went grocery shopping to Metro on Church Street, I saw Canterbury Place Retirement Residence under  construction. After it was finally completed, my friend invited me to visit her relative at Canterbury Place and I really liked what I saw. After bringing my family, we moved here in November of 2014. This was the best move I made for my husband and me.

I feel like I’m a queen – no more shopping for groceries, no more cooking, no more dishes, no more housekeeping. We get plenty of delicious food served by the friendly dining room staff. One morning at breakfast, there were no more bananas. Our friendly Chef walked in to the breakfast bistro and asked me if everything was okay. I told him there were no more bananas and he said just wait a minute. A little while later he came back with two grocery bags full of bananas from Metro – I just cannot forget his thoughtfulness of getting me the bananas… I really appreciated that.

My husband needed a lot of help from the caring nursing staff – in the morning to wake him, bathe him, dress him and get him ready for the day, and in the evening to get him ready for bed.

I am so happy living here in the friendly community with so much help from all the staff and residents; they go out of their way to accommodate me with my requests whenever I need their help. There are so many interesting trips and activities, exercise classes, movies, drawing, knitting, bingo, music, craft sales, etc.

This is my home. I am living with all of my new friends and I am very happy every day!
