Our Perspective

How we see Golden Pond Retirement Residence

Ralph Villman and Lore Bieber have a unique vision in retirement living, manifested in Golden Pond Retirement Residence, east of Oshawa. This community is ideal for the nature lover, the aspiring mystic, or anyone who loves peace and tranquility. It feels like a spiritual retreat you can call home, and indeed the ranch-style building will quickly become just that for you, surrounded by peers who love it here.

If space, fresh air, and serenity are things you crave more as you get older, Golden Pond is the place for you. Just seven minutes off the 401, this is a perfect location for someone looking to get (or stay) away from the traffic and bustle of the GTA. It’s also much more affordable than most GTA retirement homes.

In this setting, a true family feel includes staff and seniors. The deep sense of faith that roots this community finds expression in daily kindnesses and staff’s compassionate attention to residents. Suites here are refreshingly homey, each with a deck that gives people personal space outside. The gazebo, pond, gardens, and lively bird feeders, all add to the tranquility you'll feel. The hardwood flooring throughout, home-cooked meals, and the sheer spaciousness of the layout add to the nostalgia for simpler times.

For all of the above, there are features like regular entertainment, daily activities, and multiple levels of care that include assistance with activities of daily living.

Community’s Perspective

How Golden Pond Retirement Residence sees itself

Who are you as a community?

Golden Pond Retirement offers a unique country setting for seniors who value a family-like atmosphere with all-inclusive support and assisted living services at no extra cost. Nestled in nature, residents can relax on their balconies, taking in the serene views of the pond and observing wildlife in their natural habitat. Our community features private rooms and suites, with plans to add separate living units and condos. Residents enjoy home-cooked meals made with fresh ingredients sourced from local farmers, ensuring both comfort and quality of life.

What do you do differently or uniquely well?

Golden Pond is special because you’re not just moving into a retirement residence; you’re joining a family. As a locally owned and operated home, we focus on creating a welcoming, personal atmosphere where every resident is truly known. Set in a beautifully restored historic building, we combine character, comfort, and attentive care in a peaceful setting surrounded by nature.

What supports do you offer residents as they adjust to life there?

We take a very personal approach to helping new residents settle in. From the beginning, we spend time getting to know each person—their routines, preferences, and what makes them feel at home. Our close-knit community makes it easy to form connections, and our team is always nearby to answer questions and provide reassurance. Because we’re a smaller residence, that transition often feels more natural and supported.

How are residents supported if their needs change?

As needs change, we’re able to adjust support through our 24-hour care services, including assistance with daily living, medication management, and personal care. Because our team knows each resident well, these changes can feel gradual and familiar. It’s also comforting for couples—if one person requires more support, both can often remain in the same community, continuing to enjoy daily life together.

Under what conditions would you advise someone against choosing your community?

Golden Pond may not be the right fit for someone seeking a highly clinical environment or a large residence. Our strength is in providing a warm, home-like setting with personalized support. We’re best suited for those who value connection, comfort, and a close community where care feels personal rather than institutional.

What might residents find surprising about your community?

Many people are surprised by the character of the building and the beauty of the surroundings. Our home, once a historic hotel, offers unique suites and inviting spaces, along with views of the Waterford ponds and nearby trails. There’s a peacefulness here, combined with a strong sense of community, that people don’t always expect.

How will your community change in the next five years?

Looking ahead, we’ll continue building on our strong sense of family and community while introducing thoughtful updates and improvements. With new ownership committed to honouring our traditions while bringing fresh ideas, our focus will remain on enhancing daily life, maintaining high standards of care, and ensuring residents feel safe, valued, and at home.

We offer 24-hour support, including personal care and medication assistance.

I've been a resident at Golden Pond for 16 years now. The owners and employees are loving and family-oriented. I find the care given is good, to understanding that even if all you need is a hug, it's there for you. Being out of town a ways, we see some wildlife here. Deer have been seen drinking at ...

My mom likes GP because of the quiet and homey feel. She feels very comfortable living there. The people there take excellent care of her. If she is having a crisis they are there for her and supporting her in her needs. I would recommend GP because of the care and the country charm that GP has. My ...
