We at Comfort Life are proud to host the Village on our website. It’s a state-of-the-art memory care community, an ideal setting for people suffering the adverse effects of Alzhimer’s and other forms of dementia. Dementia sufferers can live here safely, free to come and go wherever they like. There’s no need for family members to worry about typical tendencies to elopement or getting lost. Residents have a lifestyle that promotes more activity and requires less medication. Everything about this community makes the best of what is decidedly a bad situation.
At Comfort Life, we’ve been excited about the Village ever since it was first announced in 2017. In Canada, it’s the best innovation yet, in design for memory care. The Village is built from the ground up with the needs of Alzheimer’s and dementia sufferers top of mind. We love how this both implements and adds to innovations in memory care.
Prominent effects of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia are memory loss, disorientation and elopement, so the best environment for sufferers is one that mitigates these issues safely and effectively, yet non-intrusively. We see this ideally manifest in the Village in Langley, a setting that’s familiar and friendly, while smartly incorporating needed safety features. These include a fence around the perimeter and a blu-tooth-enabled security system that lets community staff know the whereabouts of any resident in real time, at any time. An important aspect of design for memory care is de-institutionalization and de-clinicalization of the care environment, inherent in the village layout that includes a general store, doctor’s office, hair salon, workshop, and more.
People live in colourful cottages here, attended by staff who are also suitably expert in their training and approach. The Village’s staff to resident ratio of 1:1 exceeds standards and is unheard of elsewhere in the industry. On top of all the above, it’s set in a quiet neighbourhood in one of the most beautiful cities in the country. We’ve certainly never seen anything like it before.
We asked The Village Langley to answer the following questions:
Who are you as a community?
The Village is Canada’s first village-style residence specializing in supporting those with dementia & memory conditions.Inspired by communities in the Netherlands & U.S., our cottage-style living is surrounded by five acres of secured grounds with walking paths, gardens, farm animals & a water rock garden. You’ll be able to explore your surroundings safely & securely. Our focus is on providing an enriched living experience where each person experiences a purposeful & meaningful life. Our six single-storey cottage-like homes are designed to enhance the lives of persons living with dementia. Sensory gardens, accessible walking paths with benches, outdoor activity terraces, a games lawn, natural meadows, a water garden, community centre & plaza are part of this special setting. Villagers’ physical, mental & emotional health needs are managed by nursing, medical & home support teams with knowledge & training in person-directed dementia care.
What do you do differently or uniquely well?
We believe and practice a resident-centric approach. We are happy to offer many choices for our residents so they can live the way they wish to live. At one of our communities' residents gain independence, have help when they need it and enjoy everything this lifestyle has to offer.
What supports do you offer residents as they adjust to life there?
Our new resident orientation helps those who have moved here to learn all about the different services we offer. With our experience and understanding, this is new experience for some, we want to make this transition as smooth as possible for families and new residents. Our leadership team works closely with families and residents to ensure all questions are answered and a new resident is feeling at ease. If you are unsure about moving in right now, we offer trial stays at many of our communities. New residents' tea parties and wine & cheese's are a great way to get to know others in the community.
What might residents find surprising about your community?

"My aunt was lucky to become one of the first residents here, and I have visited often. This is a truly groundbreaking facility and the staff are as patient and friendly as you'd hope for. I have noted the postings by others who are upset by the cost of living at The Village; asking "who can afford to live here?" and suggesting it is only for the elite.
While I could not afford to live here, that is due to my particular circumstances and life choices. My aunt can afford to live here for many ..."
