Reviews of Chartwell Stonehaven Retirement Residence

Gain exclusive insight into life at Chartwell Stonehaven Retirement Residence. Comfort Life’s reviews give you exclusive insider information.

Our perspective

Chartwell Stonehaven offers a fulfilling, rich life. Chartwell’s reputation as an industry leader is based on everything you’ll find here, including completely contemporary design and décor both internally and externally, all the amenities you can want, and a caring community made up of both staff and residents. And still, there are distinctly excellent aspects of Chartwell Stonehaven.

The exterior of the property alone is a big part of community life. Stonehaven is surrounded by trees, with Deevy Pines Park across the road and many groomed walking trails nearby in this quiet area of Kanata. The peaceful centre courtyard features pleasant gardens and beautiful landscaping.

Inside, there’s a welcoming lobby where you’ll be welcomed by a gracious “director of first impressions.” The interior is clean, contemporary and brightly lit throughout. Amenities include an activity room, bistro/café, chapel, craft room, fitness room, games room, gardens, library, lounges, TV room, spa and wellness centre, and more. Activities in Chartwell Stonehaven include billiards, a book club, guest speakers, outings to local attractions and shopping, shuffleboard, yoga, and more. Suites here are also among the most spacious you’ll find among retirement homes anywhere. Dining is elegantly laid out in a spacious dining room, and the fare itself combines a focus on nutrition with delectable flavour. All of this creates what can truly be called a lifestyle for seniors here. None of that speaks truly of the daily life seniors live here.

Like other Chartwell communities, Stonehaven is renowned for its warm, welcoming staff, and a positive atmosphere that’s filtered from the top down. The number of staff who’ve been here for many years is confirmation of a principled organization with solid values. That’s not to mention their being well-versed in dealing with seniors’ needs, experience residents appreciate. Staff are genuinely interested in seniors and their concerns. Families who trust loved ones to Chartwell Stonehaven gain lasting peace of mind.

My mother decided to move to Kanata from Montreal after my father died in 2022. When she arrived she had a sudden health crisis and I had to quickly find a residence for her. We had visited Stonehaven before and I went in to see if they had room. From the second I walked in the help I received was overwhelming. We were able to arrange for her to move in a week later and get the care she needed to recover, and for me to be able to keep going. Mom has been there for 6 months now and is adjusting well, she also has access to a doctor - no small thing in 2023. She has new friends and enjoys the woods in the area and is looking forward to using the courtyard in better weather. All of the staff are outstanding. I cannot thank them enough, they made a tough time so much easier.

Having lived in our family home in Kanata for 50 years my wife died and our children and grandchildren had all moved to their own homes I was left in our house alone . This was not a pleasant way of life ! On the advice of a home-visiting nurse who had treated my wife I moved to Stonehaven Retirement Residence . This made a vast improvement to my life ! I was warmly welcomed by the staff and by a few friends who were already living there . Many of the staff had been there for years and were adept at handling the problems of elderly residents . The food was good , plentiful with a vast variety of options always available . The variety of accommodation was impressive , all units had ample closet space and good private bathrooms . Plenty of activities to suit most tastes were always available, with professional entertainers coming frequently (except during the virus period) . A qualified nurse and a nursing assistant are on duty 24 hours a day and each day of the year. A bus is permanently present to take residents to many attractions, picnics, shopping areas and other facilities. There is an enclosed open-air area in the center of the residence where we can sit peacefully in a pleasant garden . During the whole Covid virus period of disruptions no Stonehaven resident caught the virus or any of its variations - the staff kept us well protected ! ! ! They should be proud and congratulated for this achievement . I am completely satisfied that I moved from living alone to this residence .

My mom has been a resident at the Chartwell Stonehaven Seniors Residence since July 2021. It has been a very positive experience thus far and I have no doubt it will continue to be a positive experience moving forward. The residence is beautifully maintained! It is clean , bright and welcoming! The staff is exceptional! The director of the residence sets a very positive tone and the staff follow suit! The people who run Stonehaven are dynamic, caring, loving, fun and genuinely interested in working with seniors! Their sincerity shows! They have been diligent and thorough in respecting all guidelines during this pandemic! They have made the safety of the residents the number one priority and as a result they have not had any issues with cases of Covid or variants! My mom feels very safe here and I have peace of mind!

We helped my mother and father-in-law relocate to Chartwell Stonehaven in the middle of Covid. Even though logistics were difficult due to covid, the staff were incredibly helpful and understanding. The facility is bright, clean and spacious. Staff are helpful and kind. I would recommend this home for anyone searching for a senior's residence.

Stonehaven was our Mum’s home for over 3 years and during that time we were always very satisfied with all aspects of the residence. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, very attentive to individual needs and Mum always complimented the food. Before the pandemic our Mum enjoyed the social activities and especially the frequent outings and shopping trips. During the pandemic, Stonehaven did everything “by the book” with an extra dose of caution, and thankfully remained COIVD-free. As restrictions lifted our Mum again enjoyed walking the well-kept grounds and the neighbourhood, including the beautiful forest across the street. Recommending Stonehaven comes without reservation — until her needs recently changed, Stonehaven was ideal.

We found Chartwell Stonehaven Retirement Residence after my father was suddenly hospitalized and unable to return home in the fall of 2020. The facility itself has a warm atmosphere, is well maintained and the staff professional and caring. We especially appreciated the kindness of Matt and the many staff who cared for my father during this difficult time. And though Covid added enormous stress to an already very difficult situation, we were comforted knowing that strict precautions were in place while still ensuring that he was able to feel the love of family. The staff is made up of so many kind people - the nurses, PSWs, kitchen, housekeeping, reception, recreation, management, and medical staff, as well as many others - went above and beyond to make my father feel comfortable and cared for. On behalf of our family, we would like to thank each of them for their care of my father during the last few weeks of his life. - J.Carvalho/K.Brisebois

My father was diagnosed with cancer last November (2020) and was no longer able to live at home with the level of support he needed. We looked for a suitable location and found Chartwell Stonehaven, which provided the services we needed at a reasonable price.

Our dealings with Matt from Stonehaven were excellent and the level of care that our father received from the nurses and PSWs there was nothing less than phenomenal. Despite the complications that Covid created, and recognizing my father's terminal condition, they made accommodations to ensure that he would not feel isolated in this stressful phase of his life and that my sisters and I could easily visit while complying with Covid restrictions. All the staff we met were kind, competent and caring. Even after he was transferred to hospital in late December, never to return unfortunately, staff would call us to enquire how he was doing.

As for the facilities themselves, from what little I could see as a result of the Covid restrictions preventing wandering around, it was all clean, neat, and well-maintained. I wish my father had been able to enjoy this facility for longer than he ultimately did, but for the time he was there, we are glad he was in a place where he received such warm and personal care.

Our family wishes to thank Matt and all the nurses and PSW at Chartwell Stonehaven for the care and affection they showed our father in his last days.

My mother is very happy at Stonehaven, even during these covid times. She loves that her 1-bedroom apartment looks out over a lovely wooded area where she can keep a keen eye out for songbirds from her balcony. She is so complementary of the very friendly and welcoming staff who work so hard to organize activities where social distancing is maintained and fun is not sacrificed. The hallway exercise classes have been very welcomed - just the right level for whoever attends. My mother made the decision to move to Stonehaven after staying there for a short time for respite from surgery, pre-covid. The courtyard garden proved a wonderfully restful and pretty place to sit, read or visit. And now, she enjoys a daily walk on the premises around the building passing by the woods and the quiet surroundings. She has opted to cook for herself most days, but on occasion she very much enjoys the dining room and finds the meals tasty and healthy. Stonehaven is independent living but with many options for being social - a great home for my mother.

Stonehaven Manor is a truly wonderful retirement residence. My mother-in-law has lived there for the last 2 years and she is very happy there. The accommodations are excellent, the staff is very professional and helpful, the grounds are lovely and the food is great. We've had several occasions to celebrate milestone events with my mother-in-law in the residence dining room, and the staff have gone out of their way to make it a memorable occasion for all of us. The residence also has an outreach program that gets them involved in community activities, and my curling club has benefitted from this when they sponsored several of our special events.

My mother is a resident and I can honestly say that she is in the best, and safest, place possible especially in these extremely challenging times. The staff are so professional and so committed to the well being of all the residents. They try their best to make everyone's day special. This past Mother's Day my mom didn't need me as she had a whole other family of staff making her day. She too has high praise for everyone. Thank you so much for keeping her safe.
