Seeking out memory care early, for those suffering from Alzheimer's' Disease, can be part of a holistic approach to dealing with the disease. Finding a retirement home where the safety and security of your loved one is ensured, is good advice for many families. In many cases, the elderly loved one's traditional home may not be designed for safety or security of someone suffering from Alzheimer's.
Create a palliative care team ahead of time
Elderly dementia sufferers can make clear their care wishes in advance of their impending decline. If they have a relationship with care staff ahead of time, they can ensure that care staff knows their wishes. The advantages of this are many, but to list some basics:
- Care staff can also come to fully understand the daily routines and requirements of your loved one
- Care homes create an ongoing support structure as your elderly loved one's disease progresses past middle stages
- Staff can develop a fuller understanding of what level of care he or she might expect and/or be fully comfortable with

Professional staff can develop a personal relationship with your aging loved one that can help to keep them grounded as they pass into the final stages and into their final days. Later, this fully developed, grounded relationship can be profoundly important to helping caregivers fully understand how to help the patient as they enter the final stages in the progress of the disease. This mutual understanding can help alleviate stress and confusion in the difficult times ahead. Looking far ahead, there is an opportunity to make those final days less stressful than they might be, hopefully avoiding a move to a hospital environment, for example.
Looking ahead as early on as possible, you can garner memory care in a care home, where your loved one lives in optimal safety. As the disease progresses, retirement residences are perfectly equipped to help with a variety of needs related to dementia. Specifically, these needs include the following:
- feeding difficulties and other assistance typically related to assisted living facilities
- wandering, sundowning, and other aspects of the advanced disease
- infection and other medical issues
Later, the fully developed relationship among all caregiving staff with the client can be key to coping in the final days when your elderly loved one is in palliative care. Given the understanding that Alzheimer's Disease is progressive toward death, it can be wise to look ahead to that end, and find a retirement home early that offers everything you need, including palliative care.
