Holland Gardens in Bradford, Ontario, opened in 2019, a welcome addition to the life of that town on the northern edge of the GTA. "This has been needed for a long time," says local resident Nancy Young. "We’ve lost many people because of a lack of seniors’ housing here, people who have lived their entire lives here [and made] Bradford what it is."
Holland Gardens bring superior senior living to town. "When people walk in the lobby here," says Shelley Snoulten, Holland Gardens’ Sales and Marketing Manager, "they feel right at home." That homelike environment is highlighted by a glowing fireplace that greets them. Interiors throughout are equally warm and bright.
This is a vibrant community of people the same age, living in a wonderful environment. Thanks to its newness, Holland Gardens is able to offer state-of-the-art care and service. First, dining here is going to focus on open-style seating and other flexibility that allow you to make every meal a great experience. The community will also offer a full continuum of care. The memory care floor will offer a household-style environment, avoiding the clinical feel of some older senior care residences. Over 80% of suites will have balconies or French balconies, allowing most residents easy access to the great outdoors. Hilda Anderson was the third person to move in here, and as she says, "we make fast friends here."
Holland Gardens is only one of several projects in the works country-wide that will bring newness into the lives of senior clients. Other recent projects include Fores/tview in North York and Carp Commons in Ottawa Region, both opened earlier last year.
Fores/tview is exemplary of what you can find when you move into a new community. This building offers independent and assisted living in a mid-rise backing on to parkland, near Bathurst and Finch. Everything here is contemporary. There are expansive windows in the main floor lounges. Right inside the door, visitors meet with an interactive kiosk that's both engaging and helpful. Any question you might have, the answer is right at your fingertips thanks to touchscreen technology. It dazzles throughout. Bradfordians wondering what Holland Gardens might look like when it's all done can take a trip down the 401 to North York to see Verve’s expertise at work here.
Carp Commons, on the outskirts of Ottawa, opened in February 2018, bringing the best of all that’s new. Here, too, brightness is an important aspect of all the interior spaces. Probably the most noteworthy example is the Country Kitchen, a shared space where people sit and chat over breakfast and other meals. The dining room is similarly very contemporary in its design, with centerpiece windows adding a decorative touch that also serves as noise reduction.
Innovative memory care village
Verve Senior Living is also behind one of the most innovative developments in senior care in the country, a dementia village planned for Langley, BC. The Village in Langley opened in August of 2019, proposed to be home to over 70 people, with the entire grounds designed and built with the needs of dementia patients in mind. The Village is inspired by Hogeweyk in the Netherlands. The project is led by Elroy Jesperson, building on Verve’s experience with assisted and extended care communities developed over the past 30 years. It’s an innovative community made possible because it is built from the ground up with the needs of dementia patients in mind.
The biggest advantage of moving into a new community is that it incorporates a fully contemporary understanding. The focus in this community, as Jesperson says, is on “person-directed living.” It’s designed to be open to the needs of the people who will move in there, open-ended, who will turn the community into something new and innovative.
