Your senior care costs will largely be determined by the type of retirement community or home care service you choose, as well as the level of care required. Once you have determined these factors, your next step is to research the associated costs and find a retirement community or home care service within your budget.
In Ontario, there are a wide range of costs for retirement communities, long-term care and home care services. Depending on what you are looking for, Ontario offers a range of services from modest to luxurious – also ranging in cost accordingly. Retirement communities in Ontario cost between $1,500 and $6,000 and home care costs average from $25 to $75 an hour.
Average costs of retirement communities
According to the CMHC’s Senior Housing Report (last done in 2021), the average cost of renting a seniors’ housing space in Ontario is $3,354 per month. Keep in mind that in Ontario, retirement communities usually offer a higher level of amenities than in other provinces, and rent usually includes three meals a day, utilities, on-site medical services and a registered nurse, along with a variety of other services and amenities.
As an aside, but notable as a popular type of "retirement community," there are a burgeoning number of resort-style 55 plus communities found across the province. - The detailed care you require (feeding, bathing, etc.). These are often provided on a per-service fee

How will you afford it?
For anyone moving into a retirement home, you need to know the full costs associated with each home or residence before you move in and you need to be aware of potential changes to those costs such as lease or rental increases or changes to your income or investments.
Paying for a retirement home may be easier than you think when you consider that the monthly rate covers many living expenses including everything from home repairs to property taxes to heat and hydro. If you are incurring expenses for in-home care, or children are taking time off work to care for an elderly loved one, these add to the "hidden costs" of living at home, as well.
Regular benefits for seniors include Old Age Security (OAS) and Canada Pension Plan (CPP) benefits, but there may be many more sources of income available to you. Depending on who you are and what you have done with money, this can include a workplace pension, investments, rental income, etc. We provide an overview of how people typically fund seniors care, and in many cases, family members may pitch in to cover the costs of caring for an elderly loved one.
