“We’re the only one like this in Canada,” says Elroy Jespersen, of The Village in Langley. “It's a much more dignified way to live for someone who needs support, compared to traditional senior care institutions.” The Village, opened in August of 2019, serves as a sterling example of both innovative memory care and Verve Senior Living’s enthusiasm for innovation in all aspects of senior care.
This enthusiasm is also seen in their other new communities, peppered across the map of Canada. These include Holland Gardens in Bradford, Fores/tview in North York, Carp Commons in Ottawa Region, and Credit River in Mississauga. Seniors living in these new buildings benefit from the fresh environment, built from the ground up with needs of contemporary seniors in mind.
The focus in The Village, as Jesperson says, is on “person-directed living.” It’s designed to meet the needs of the people who move there, who will turn the community into something new and innovative. That "new home" feeling
Holland Gardens in Bradford, Ontario, also opened in 2019, bringing superior senior living to this town just north of the GTA. "When people walk in the lobby here," says Shelley Snoulten, Holland Gardens’ Sales and Marketing Manager, "they love the homelike environment created here.”
Hilda Anderson agrees. “It brought me out of my doldrums after my husband passed,” she says. She was the third person to move into the community. “It absolutely helped that it was new.” The newness brings rejuvenation to others who come in also. “The people that have been coming to live here are absolutely wonderful,” adds Anderson. Thanks to its newness, Holland Gardens is able to offer state-of-the-art care and service. First, dining here is focused on open-style seating and other flexibility that allow you to make every meal a great experience. The community will also offer a full continuum of care. The memory care floor will offer a household-style environment, avoiding the clinical feel of some older senior care residences.
When new people move in, there’s something about a new community that makes it easier to find new friends. At Holland Gardens, you can look forward to the friendliness and compassion of Hilda. “I seem to know people when they come in,” she says. “I was a nurse all my life, so I dealt with a lot of different people. If they don’t know where to find something I like to help them,” she says. “We make fast friends here."
Verve's new communities across Canada
Other recent Verve projects like Fores/tview in North York and Carp Commons in Ottawa Region, both opened in 2018, and Credit River in Mississauga, opened in 2016, all encourage people to recapture their joie de vivre together. Fores/tview is exemplary of what you can find when you move into a new community. This building offers independent and assisted living in a mid-rise backing on to parkland, near Bathurst and Finch. Everything here is contemporary. There are expansive windows in the main floor lounges. Right inside the door, visitors meet with an interactive kiosk that's both engaging and helpful. Any question you might have, the answer is right at your fingertips thanks to touchscreen technology. It dazzles throughout.
Carp Commons, on the outskirts of Ottawa, opened in February 2018, bringing the best of all that’s new. Here, too, brightness is an important aspect of all the interior spaces. Probably the most noteworthy example is the Country Kitchen, a shared space where people sit and chat over breakfast and other meals. The dining room is similarly very contemporary in its design, with centerpiece windows.

At Credit River, Gerrie Wynen, like Hilda at Holland Gardens, was one of the first four people to move in. He attests to the value inherent in that newness and the easy friendships that result. “We got to know each other pretty quickly,” he chuckles. “My wife had a disability, so I couldn’t help her. We had a house and a trailer, then, and I sold both of them. It’s been the right place to be.”
Still other Verve communities that are also quite new include The Heritage in Kelowna and Palermo Village in Oakville, both opened in 2015. Richmond Hill Retirement Residence and Canterbury Place in North York opened in 2012; Port Credit Residences, opened in 2011; and Four Elms in Thornhill and The Roxborough in Newmarket, both opened in 2010.
Ted, a resident at the former still remembers the first time he walked in the door. “As soon as we entered, we found the newness and the atmosphere warm and welcoming.” If you’re going to make a fresh start, why not make it as fresh and inspired as possible?
