The move into an assisted living community may be stressful for some seniors and their families. Be assured that most people adjust to their new surroundings within the first one or two weeks. For some others, getting to the point where you feel at home in your new location is a process but you will get there if you take the right approach.
This is our guide through that process, starting with leading up to the move, but with a deeper look at the following steps:
Facing up to the move into assisted living
Change is challenging under any circumstances. During the move, you might go through some difficulties. If you’ve already decided that assisted living will improve your life, keep that in mind.
Here’s a look at several typical scenarios, so you can see that your story is not unusual, but a situation retirement homes’ staff and other community members are familiar with:
- You or your family (or health care provider) have been aware of fading health for some time, have had conversations and made other preparations for the move into assisted living.
- You have had a sudden health crisis (a fall or health scare) and both you and your loved ones (or doctor) believe that the move into an assisted living retirement home is the best solution for your needs. You may not have thought much about moving into a retirement home until now.
- A sudden change in lifestyle or personal circumstances (like the passing of a spouse) has resulted in the need for you to seek dedicated help from professional care providers.
Of course, there may be other reasons, but it’s important to realize that you are not alone. Many others have gone through the process, facing their own resistance and realizing, as seen below, that there can be much to be thankful for in the coming months and years.
Look at your fears and insecurities
The common thread in all resistance to and fear of change is insecurity. This insecurity takes several different forms, depending on your disposition, and to some degree, how old you are:
- Traditionalists are insecure about personal and financial security, illness, injury and fear being alone.
- Boomers fear the loss of independence and intellectual and personal stimulation.
- Generation Xers have difficulty acknowledging that they are aging, and they value customization and access to resources
Understanding insecurities in a broader context, facing, probing and challenging them can help you find a path to personal empowerment. A big picture here is beyond the scope of content on a web page, of course. But know that you are not alone. In an assisted living community, there are many people facing the same problems and the same insecurities.
Profiles of others in assisted living
How communities are prepared for you
During the search process, there are things you can look for in retirement homes that will help make the transition successful:
One ideal step to take as you search for assisted living communities is the trial stay. If possible, take trial stays in several different communities, to get an overview of differences between them. Even if you “knew all along” that your first choice was the right one, getting confirmation is ideal.
A look at transition teams and welcoming committees
“Our welcoming committee is completely resident-run,” says April Johnstone at the Redwoods, in Ottawa. “They do visits regularly and they’re really open to communication.” Having people dedicated to helping you is something that makes moving into communities like the Redwoods unlike any other move you’ve ever made before. “It’s really comforting to people to have that one-to-one with someone who has been here and gone through the transition themselves. After the first few weeks, new residents will have met everyone on the welcoming committee, so when they do come down for cocktails or coffee or a movie, there’s a couple of familiar faces in the crowd already. It really helps.”

Understanding different personalities and attitudes toward change
Rachelle Vroom of Symphony Senior Living Orleans says, “Some people settle in very quickly, make friends. For those who have been isolated for a long time, who may not have had a lot of family support, it can be a little tougher for them to change. All of a sudden they’re in a dining room full of strange people, they’ve got people coming in and checking up on them to make sure they are alright. So, never mind the stress of downsizing, packing and moving … it’s just understandable if some people take awhile to adjust.” This is expected by the professionals like Vroom. They have dealt with this many times in the past. They recognize stages residents go through, thresholds they will cross at their own pace.
“Many people take time to get comfortable with the feel of their apartments, before they get to the point where they have all their stuff put away how they want it,” she says. “Then maybe at this point, coming down to the dining room for meals has become more routine for them. And now they might be ready to go with a table mate or a new friend and try something new.”
Many people find it hard to adjust to having someone care for them. But receiving care on a daily basis is the greatest benefit you will receive in assisted living. It’s good to put aside your old preconceptions of yourself as a self-reliant person. Some quick tips:
- Focus on gratitude. Appreciate what people are doing for you.
- Focus on whatever positives you can find. A sunny day, birds at the window, a surprise visit from someone you haven’t seen in ages … is there a day that goes by where there wasn’t one small instance of grace?
- Keep a sense of humour. Laughter is the best medicine, goes the old adage. Find something to laugh or chuckle about as often as you can.
- It’s not personal. Don’t take your poor health or illness personally. Don’t dwell on blame or a past in which you were more self reliant.
"Pick the people you enjoy being with and share the same interests with," says Dorothy. "You just have to listen and join in." Like many, she found that the adjustment to a new community was challenging, but she has come to love her new home at Westerleigh PARC in Vancouver.
Breaking the solitude habit
All too often, when people move into assisted living, they retreat to the comfortable place of solitude. Those who are accustomed to eating alone will find a place by themselves in the dining hall. Others who may have been recently widowed may feel that they do not want to talk to others because it only brings their sorrow closer to the surface again. It can take time to make a personal adjustment.
“Some habits had gotten pretty ingrained before I moved here,” says Bill, from a Waterloo retirement home. “So I just picked a spot at an empty table. I guess I didn’t want to feel like I was interrupting things. It is kind of like being the new kid in school.”
Quick tips on easing yourself through the transition into community:
- Stay open to new contacts and learning from people you meet.
- Make daily goals to connect with people in the community. For example, make it a daily goal in your first week to connect with and talk with at least three people (five people … more) every day of the first week after moving in.
- Make it a goal to attend at least one in-house activity every day.
- Find a personal connection point with people in the community. Ask questions. Find out who people are and what connection they have to you.
- Believe you are there to learn and to grow personally.
- Work on developing your emotional awareness.
Enjoy the benefits of retirement living
Tamara Billy of the Erinview by Sifton in Mississauga agrees with Vroom and others who point out that the process is different for each person who comes into their community. A major changemaker at the Erinview and many other communities is food. There are three aspects of this: the quality of the dining experience, the fact that meals are served and cleaned up, and that you are eating with others.
“We see people’s health improve on a regular basis, after moving in here,” she says. “A lot of family members who inquire here, one of their main concerns is that parents aren’t eating well." Communities like Erinview routinely report examples of people whose health has improved drastically after moving into assisted living. “Recently I moved a couple in here, where the family was trying their best to cook meals for them, but they really couldn’t keep that up. When the couple moved in here, they were,” she chuckles, recalling, “... really packing on the weight. The husband said, ‘I love the food here! I’m never going home again!’”
The benefits of having all their meals provided for them regularly were really unfathomable and unappreciable until they moved in and benefited from that daily. Vroom tells a similar anecdote about having to ask a family to buy new clothes for a resident after a few months because she was back to a healthy weight for the first time in years. Improved eating habits leads to an improved outlook on life. After Hazel moved into a Guelph-area retirement community, her changed eating habits resulted in her renewing her love of life. A key part of this was that she could eat with different people every day.
Eating with others and being in community
“I have great companions at dinner and at breakfast,” Ruth says. “Before this, I was living on my own and I hadn’t realized how much I would enjoy the company.” After taking her doctor’s advice and moving into a Toronto assisted living seniors’ home, mealtimes are now like “a conversation party.”
Similarly, Bill has found a wonderful group of mealtime friends in his Kitchener-Waterloo assisted living community. “There are four of us who like to sit together. People adopted me when I moved in here.” His friend Lois chimes in, “We have a very good time. We get along very well. We discuss everything, politics, the news, the food, everything!”
It's a story we hear so often. People come to love the communal life of a retirement home, where “friends are always just outside the door.” People wish they'd moved earlier. Being alone in your own home, with only intermittent care is unhealthy. Loneliness can exacerbate poor health.
Having others around you to just be around, to observe through care procedures can help you be more patient with yourself and see yourself in context. We think you’ll find that the people around you - fellow community members - really are the right people for you at this time of your life.
These modern buildings, cleaned regularly, and designed for accessibility are the best place for you. These are ideally equipped to give you the care you need. Assisted living retirement homes will offer you new opportunities for joyful moments, a renewed outlook on life, and the possibility of complete revitalization.
Moving into assisted living
Finally, there’s one last thing that can make the transition into assisted living perfect. if you can afford it, we highly recommend that you work with an experienced Master ASA real estate agent. These agents offer a variety of help and services, making the move into assisted living seamless, taking care of many of the details of the move, while you may be otherwise occupied with dealing with health or other concerns.
