“Every year when we ask our community members what they like best about living here, the overwhelming response we hear is: friendship,” says Miri Koller, President at Greenwood Retirement Communities. As important as features like food, care levels, and other considerations are for people reviewing retirement communities, the social aspect of retirement living wins out as the perennially eminent characteristic of life in senior living. There’s no better way to maintain social connection than having friends as a daily part of your immediate environment.
The importance of a social life and friends in your immediate surroundings dovetails with insights gained from elsewhere in the world. As with the word ikigai, a moai—a Japanese word that describes a support group—is a critical part of a better, longer life. Both are values prominent on the Japanese island of Okinawa, a focus of study in recent years because of the longevity of people there. Okinawa is one of the world’s several blue zones—areas of the world that foster a long life, yes, but one that arises out of days that are well lived. The key to a moai is sharing, says Dan Buettner, leading researcher of blue zones. You’re expected to share joy, of course, but perhaps more importantly, “if things go bad, you always have someone to share that with, too, as you travel through life together.”
In retirement communities, you’ll find just that: people sharing life, something virtually impossible when you’re isolated on your own. Respondents to Greenwood’s internal survey say a variety of things like “I’m never alone, I always have company.” They’re happy that they have “found new friends here,” and it’s a “friendly, helpful atmosphere.”
Groups of friends come together and navigate their days together in retirement homes across the country. “We all laugh together,” says Hilda Anderson at Holland Gardens in Bradford, Ontario. “There’s about eight of us here and we call ourselves the noisy bunch. Some are noisier than others,” she laughs. “When Bob comes in the room, his face just lights up and so do we all.”
Like Holland Gardens’ noisy bunch, moais of supportive friends arise spontaneously in other communities. At Sifton Westhill in Kitchener-Waterloo, the foursome of Lois Swanson and her friends, Mike, Bill, and Alice are “the talk of the community,” says Lois. “The four of us often find ourselves sitting together.” That friendship came quite easily, too. “When Bill moved in a few years ago, we saw him sitting alone and I said to Alice, ‘Let’s invite him over.’ The rest, as they say, is history,” she grins.
Social Connection and its Effects on Health
Like others, Miri Koller is puzzled by some older Canadians’ insistence on remaining alone in their own homes. “There’s a large body of research on the importance of relationships to our well-being,” she says. And indeed, that body of research still grows.
A survey last year by the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) reported that seniors who are lonelier or have less social contact report lower levels of general health. The authors of the survey conclude that “loneliness impacts people’s description of their overall health more than twice as much as just being older.”
While many cities and towns offer community activities and even adult day programs, these can be limiting because they put the onus on people to go out and participate.
Natalie Tommy of Nautical Lands Group says, “Many older people find it challenging to change their routines.” But in a retirement community, social living is a routine part of life.
At Prince of Peace in Calgary, Joyce Kinloch describes a key aspect of seniors’ communities echoed by so many others. “The great thing about living here,” she says, “is that you just open your door and someone smiles at you. There are always friends just down the hall or right outside the door.”
The organized activities in many communities are the place where those friendships grow and deepen. Lois Swanson says, “we go for picnics in summer, one of the regular outings here, and the purpose is always to get out together. We went out to Goderich two weeks ago, right on the boardwalk there, and it was such a nice day, with a picnic right on the pier. It was just such a lovely lunch there, surrounded by a bunch of friends.” Over several years together at Sifton Westhill, she and her friends “have all gotten to know each others’ families. We’re all about the same age and it’s just so nice.”
It’s really about “finding the right tribe,” says Aislinn Leonard in describing moais. Living together, eating together, playing together is something fundamental to humans, as understood from the work of E.O. Wilson and other sociobiologists. It’s missing not only for many seniors who choose to remain on their own, but also for an increasing number of people from all age groups in our culture. The model of communal living found in many retirement homes, may, in fact be something we can all learn from. In close community, we’re more naturally inclined to be our better selves. We find reasons to act more nicely, engage in more activities, eat a healthier diet, and to simply be happier.
