Earlier in 2019, a national survey by the Leger Group found that Canadians 55 and older are the happiest of all age groups. A key factor in happiness was a “current sense of freedom” and “living the life they always dreamed of.” Things media and advertisers want you to believe, or that you might intuitively emphasize — personal finances and current state of health—were further down the list, each scoring below 10 percent. The findings of the survey match insights from other research, including the World Happiness Report of 2012, which says, “No people can be truly happy if they do not feel that they are choosing the course of their own life.”
While the majority of Canadians over 55 are happy, Leger reports that a remaining 39% of them don’t call themselves happy. Why is that? Bette at Westerleigh PARC in Vancouver might have an answer, “Your attitude towards life should be one of joy ... The energy you give out is returned to you double-fold.” Bette says her life purpose is simple, “to be healthy and happy.” And apropos of insights from the Leger Group, her choice is deliberate, making her days happy.
When residents gather happily together, they’re getting something more than a standard meal or drink out of it. Some residents enjoy their moments together more than their meals.
When things are out of balance, though, daily routine can in fact be a source of dissatisfaction. When meals and house maintenance are a challenge, “independence” becomes a lie. Bette, and many others, say that keeping their home and maintaining the life they were used to was indeed a burden. There comes a time when you serve yourself well to admit that “it’s just too much.” In her new home, she’s found that “there’s so much that goes on here. I love the daily activities.” In other words, she’s found contentment.
The Danish have a word for this: hygge. While Canada has always ranked well in the World Happiness Report since its inception in 2012, Denmark has been the winner almost every year. This has been a surprise to some, especially given the country’s long winters, sometimes horrible weather, and high tax rates. (All familiar facts of life in Canada, of course.)
Meik Wiking is a Danish researcher who has set out to explain this. He ties his country’s high rate of lykke (happiness) to hygge, a defining characteristic of Danish culture. Hygge is one of the most recent additions to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), and its definition is worth meditating on: “A quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.”
You can find hygge by spending time at the local pub, heading out for a walk with a loved one, or tucking into a hearty meal with friends and family and sharing a laugh. Daily cosiness and comfort, though, is increasingly difficult to hold onto for some older Canadians. April Johnstone, marketing manager at the Redwoods in Ottawa, offers, “Many seniors find it hard to deal with things in their own home. They don’t want to be getting down on their hands and knees at the bottom of the cupboards anymore. Those everyday tasks are overwhelming at times.”
When you move into a community that’s right for you, you trade in days filled with too many inconveniences for days full of little moments of comfort, togetherness, and security. “I don’t have to worry,” says Bette. “We can go on holidays when we want and I can visit my family. I just wouldn’t be able to do that if we were still living in a house.”
Her sentiment is echoed by people in other retirement communities who have also found the move a means of recapturing daily contentment. “We moved here because the house had become too big for us,” says Hilda Anderson of Holland Gardens. “We were happy with our bungalow and we loved the garden, but it was too much to manage.” Moving into a two-bedroom suite was an adjustment but a welcome one. She’s now “very content,” she says, because of the way her life has been simplified. For people like Hilda, this opens up space for something that sounds a lot like hygge. At Holland Gardens, she can enjoy sitting in the cafe, lounging with friends and “chatting it up” as she loves to do. “You couldn’t wish for more comfort than here.”
Meals are part of the daily regimen at Holland Gardens, of course, but for Hilda and her friends, there’s no preparation and no cleanup, just good times around the table together. And there are no disruptions to her hygge. “If something’s wrong in your apartment,” she says, “you just phone them at the desk and they send someone right up.”
It’s easy to capture hygge in retirement communities. “Let me give you a perfect example of some good times we have here,” says Art Thompson at Oakcrossing Retirement Living in London. “The other night we had a bonfire and I was in charge of roasting the weiners. We had people from staff here who brought family members, we had people coming down from all parts of the building, and it was really just a great time,” he says. “I was having such a good time I forgot to give myself a hot dog,” he laughs. When you’re completely lost in the pure enjoyment of the moment that you’re both creating and taking part in, that’s hygge.
The poetry group is a lovely hour. I wouldn’t miss it. The whole thing — the interaction with ideas and talking together.
At the Village of Taunton Mills in Whitby you’ll find a small group of people who have recaptured their ikigai, in this case, poetry, and share it in a group that meets once a month. Patricia Bayley is the leader of the group and also the community’s poet laureate. It’s the like-minded people all on equal footing who’ve been brought together that make this a hygge experience for all. They read poetry, some of their own, and it’s a measure of the comfort level in this group that they joyfully share their poetry. When the group gets together, “the interruptions are the main event,” she chuckles. Their time together goes too fast, and her friend Myrla Anderson says, “it’s a lovely hour. I wouldn’t miss it. The whole thing—the interaction with ideas and talking together.”
“What I love is I come downstairs in the morning for breakfast, and it’s a big treat to see other people come in,” says Helen Beaudry at the Meadowlands Retirement Residence in Ancaster, Ontario. “I sit where I can see everybody coming in the door, and I just say hi to everyone. And everybody says hello and good morning to you. I love it! I just feel like I’m in a big boarding house. And sometimes I just sit up in my suite and watch the news with my breakfast, that’s nice, too.”
Hygge is likely the description Virginia and Bob would give to times they spend working in their outdoor garden at Mulberry PARC in Burnaby. It’s also what Lois Swanson and her friends felt when their impromptu moai sat together on the pier in Goderich, looking over Lake Huron in the sunshine. You’ll find people enjoying a cup of tea together or laughing together on their way to an outing, obviously feeling lykke, in communities across the country. Giving up mundane daily chores has opened up space for these people to follow their ikigai and recapture inner happiness.
