1. Social interaction
When you’re living in a condo or a suburban neighbourhood, there might be one or two people your age. When you live in a retirement home, “Just open the door and there’s someone to talk to.” You’ll have experiences in common and share a similar history with others. You’ll “hit it off” with one, two, or more of them. Communities are populated by a mix of people ranging from homemakers to many who worked in nursing, teaching, or other service professions. There’s always someone who’ll start a conversation or share a laugh.

Welcoming committees or ambassador programs pair you with others who’ll show you around and introduce you to people. Activities directors also go over the schedule with you to learn how your interests fit with what’s available (see point #10 below). Time alone in the quiet of your suite becomes a choice.
2. Safety and security
Many retirement homes feature a 24-hour concierge on duty. They may have in-house security personnel. There’s staff on hand around the clock. There will also be some form of emergency call system or call bells. You’re protected and safe.

3. Maintenance-free living
There’s no more arranging for plumbing repairs, carpet cleaning, air conditioner upkeep, furnace servicing, or roofing. No worries about basement leaks, broken windows, or mouldy bathrooms. You’ll never replace living room furniture or appliances again. Let other people worry about all that.
4. Healthcare access
Most retirement communities offer on-site healthcare services, including regular medical check-ups, therapy, and specialized care. Get assistance when you need it. Care staff in assisted living in retirement homes include personal service workers and even nurses; many have a doctor on call. Even seniors in independent living suites find it reassuring that care is available.
5. No more housework
Take it easy. Regular housework and tidying up is a standard service in retirement communities. Someone else vacuums, dusts the shelves, cuts the grass, rakes leaves, shovels the snow, and takes out the garbage. If a lightbulb needs to be replaced, someone else does it. On top of that, there’s no more cooking or cleaning the dishes since most retirement homes offer three daily meals and refreshments as part of the plan(see #6). Most offer laundry services as well.

6. Fine cuisine and nutritious meals
When you live alone or with just two of you, making meals is taxing. So you skimp. That’s not healthy, and you may be losing weight without knowing it. Many retirement homes feature fine cuisine by Red Seal chefs, a world-class designation. All retirement homes at least offer meal plans and communal dining. Many have 24-hour bistros or snack bars. You eat well because it’s all so convenient. You eat more, thanks to the company of others. People often put on weight after moving (a good thing, if you’re underweight).
Communities typically offer a variety of fare including two or three features at lunch and dinner, along with à la carte selections. Meals often come with healthy salads, a key part of a good diet, and something you’re not likely to prepare for yourself. Food committees encourage residents to weigh in on menu choices. Many communities pride themselves on meeting residents’ wishes.

Families can also take advantage of opportunities to eat together in private dining rooms or in the main dining room. You’ll feel the joy of hosting once again, in an elegant setting. All these aspects of pleasant dining will give you new vim and vigour.
7. Physical activity
If going to a gym is inconvenient—as it is for most of us, in fact—it’s easy in a retirement home. You might pass the gym more than once daily. There, you’ll see your friends taking part in chair yoga classes, tai chi, or aerobics—ideal exercises for people your age. Join a class with others just like you, and you’ll feel comfortable stretching, pulling, even working up a sweat. If you need to exercise with a rollator or in a wheelchair, you won’t feel out of place. Classes tailor activities to every individual’s needs.
8. Accessibility
The average suburban dwelling isn’t built with seniors in mind. Your current home may have steep stairs, loose area rugs, narrow hallways, poorly designed room thresholds, and other issues. Retirement homes are built for seniors, many of them having been built or updated recently to meet current accessibility standards. They’re brightly lit and spacious. Elevators take you from floor to floor. Grab bars guide movements in tight spaces. There are no tripping hazards.
9. Transportation
For residents who no longer drive, many communities offer transportation services for shopping, medical appointments, and other outings.
10. Cultural and recreational activities
“There’s so much to do every day” is something we’ve heard more times than we can count. Retirement homes’ generous activity schedules can include everything from art classes to knitting clubs, and from live entertainment to bocce. You can discover or rekindle passions. Interested in painting but never tried it? When a class is right in your building, this is your chance to give it a go. Card games, current events chats, and good old Bingo are all easy to join.

11. Enhanced lifestyle
Many retirement homes offer a luxurious lifestyle that’s an upgrade over living in a family home or an apartment building. Amenities can include a movie theatre, swimming pool, hairdressing salon, or golf green, among others. Some smaller communities offer a home-like atmosphere. Others feel like an upscale condo and can accommodate 200 plus residents. No matter what they choose, seniors have told us, “Life is at a whole new level.”

12. Peace of mind for your family
Your family will know that there’s always someone looking out for you, you’re never alone, and that you’re well taken care of. What’s more, they’ll be happy that you’re busy, you’re making new friends, and that you’re happier in a place with so much to offer. Families will often call the peace of mind they gain “priceless.”
