Older Vancouverites will find a bright, welcoming retirement home in South Vancouver’s Shannon Oaks. Those who are currently living alone in a place that’s no longer suited to them will find this is an especially ideal place to live. You’ll discover friendly, kind people your own age, served by exceptionally helpful staff in a setting that’s wonderfully comfy and homey. It’s ideally suited to seniors, built and run with their needs in mind.

Pull up to Shannon Oaks and the impressive stone-and-wood exterior will immediately invite you to take a closer look. We love the bright lobby, naturally lit by floor-to-ceiling windows, and accented by colourful carpeting. As you look around, you’ll recognize an attention to detail that speaks to a desire to create a lovely home for seniors. It feels like a luxury hotel, but for the fact that people you see are so obviously at home here.

You’ll meet a number of people who have lived in this community for five, ten years or longer. There are some obvious reasons why they love it here. Staff provide loving care, and are well-trained and experienced in accommodating the needs of seniors. Dining is excellent, with the dining room carrying over the elegance of the rest of the interior.

There are many other noteworthy features at Shannon Oaks, including exceptionally spacious, well-appointed suites that are accessible and kept immaculate by cleaning staff. You’re free to bring your own furniture, personalizing the space as much as you see fit. That said, people don’t want to spend a lot of time in their apartments. There’s a variety of activities and amenities right here that will let you fill your day with fun and socializing, including a lively games room, exercise space, library, and more.

It has a feeling of home, or maybe even better than home... It's like a cruise ship on land and there's just all the facilities. [Mom] doesn't have to worry about her meals. My mom doesn't drive, so [before] that was just something that was very difficult. All her shopping is taken care of for her now. And it's got a lovely inner courtyard. Mom didn't get out of her suite very much [at first but] now she phones me. She says, oh, I walked around the courtyard two or three times tonight.... She gets excited about that. And it's beautiful out there.

I say, it's like Disneyland. It's ... just a beautiful place, so it's nice and you feel good about that. You want your mom or any parent to be in a great place where you feel good about it.

I wanted her to enjoy this part of her life and just instead of going from her home, maybe struggling straight into assisted living or care, because I think there's some pretty cool stuff that goes on that she can still [enjoy]. And I think her nutrition has gotten better, and those things make me feel better because now some of that weight is off my shoulders... I go in to see her at least three times a week and she's happy about it.

My sister has lived at Shannon Oaks since September of 2014. She has been very happy there and I have found the staff and administration very kind, considerate and competent in all of their interactions with her and me, I am her main support system and I do not live in Vancouver so it is a huge relief to know that she is safe and cared for. It is a beautiful facility and the residents are friendly, helpful and from my observation live their life adhering to their Christian values in terms of how they care & show concern for one another. I feel safer here than I did at home because of the people who come in here doing checks. There’s a safety about Shannon Oaks during the [pandemic] that I would have never had anywhere else. I love the way that Shannon Oaks offers me so many things, and I can take from it what suits me. I don’t have to change myself to be here. I can take part in whatever I want.
